Women's Soccer Plays to Scoreless Draw with Clarkson

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology women's soccer team played to a scoreless tie at Clarkson University on Saturday afternoon at Hantz Field. The Leopards return to Boston at 0-1-1, while the Golden Knights shift to 1-0-1 this season.

Despite the Golden Knights owning a 19-9 advantage in shots, senior keeper Christie Fleming (Braintree, Mass.) stopped all nine shots on frame to keep Clarkson at bay. In the last minute of regulation, Clarkson junior Camryn Careccia (Watervliet, N.Y.) took a desperation bid on net for the home team, but Fleming came up with the save to send both teams into extra time.

Both teams battled in their respective offensive third in the overtime periods, with Wentworth nearly putting one away in the 91st minute. Junior Alexis Stickelman (East Northport, N.Y.) lined up for a free kick after a Clarkson foul, and lofted the ball right into the six-yard-box that found the forehead of freshman Allie Gallion (Newmarket, N.H.). However, Golden Knights junior goalkeeper Elyse Green (Wilton, N.Y.) stretched all 5'4" to just barely tip the ball over net to squander the Leopards' chance. Clarkson then looked to sophomore Ashley Abel (Albany, N.Y.) for the golden goal opportunity, but her take was just wide, forcing ten final minutes of play.

The Golden Knights' defense kept Wentworth quiet in the closing period, rattling off four shots of their own - two on target that were stopped by Fleming - including a last-minute shot by junior Alicia Bushey (Niskayuna, N.Y.).

Fleming moves to 0-1-1 on the season, while Green made four saves and shifts to 1-0-1.

Wentworth returns to Boston on Tuesday for a 7:00 p.m. match against Emmanuel College.
