Baseball Sees 2020 Campaign Come to a Close

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Benedictine University's Jack Surin and Kyle Mitter combined for seven hits and five RBI as the Eagles defeated the Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team, 9-2, in the season finale at Lake Myrtle Sports Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Benedictine scored a pair of runs in the top of the first as Mitter led off the game with a triple and came home to score when Jonathan Hodo reached on an error. Hodo scored on a Surin double.
  • The Eagles tacked on single runs in the fourth and fifth innings as Surin stole third and scored on an error in the fourth and Mitten drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth.
  • Wentworth got on the board in the home half of the sixth inning with a pair of runs. With one out, junior Aidan French (Chicago, Ill.) and sophomore Nolan McManus (Milton, Mass.) drew back-to-back walks. Sophomore Kyle Desjardins (Granby, Conn.) reached on a fielders choice which saw McManus take second base on an error and he French came around to score on the play.
  • Mitter drove in two runs in the top of the seventh with a single and Jack Feeley plated him to make it 7-2. The ninth inning saw the Eagles score two more times withMitter leading off with a single and scoring on a triple from Jack Feeley and Feeley scoring on a Surin single.
  • Four Leopard seniors pitched in the contest with Ryan Joyce (Avon, Mass.) throwing the first 3.1 innings, allowing a pair of unearned runs on two hits and striking out six to fall to 0-2. Ethan Hebard (North Attleboro, Mass.) allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits in one inning, Caleb Eaton (East Hampstead, N.H.) allowed zero runs on three hits in 1.2 innings, while graduate student Leo Coelho (Marlborough, Mass.) pitched the final three innings, allowing five runs on eight hits and striking out four. Hebard and Eaton also each struck out a batter.
  • Offensively, McManus paced the Leopards with a pair of hits.

ALL-TIME SERIES:

  • This was the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
