Leopards Use Long-Range Shooting to Defeat Coast Guard

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Sophomore Adam Dombrowski (Groton, Mass.) had 18 points and 10 rebounds while junior Sam Herrick (Duxbury, Mass.) had 12 points and 10 rebounds leading Wentworth to a 71-46 win over Coast Guard in a non-conference game.

 

Wentworth (2-3) entered the game with 11 three-point field goals total in the first four games (11 of 53), shooting 20.8 percent from 3-point range, but hit 10 of 22 tonight including seven of 16 in the first half.

 

Coast Guard (3-4) actually scored the first five points of the game as the Leopards were held scoreless until a 3-pointer by sophomore Eric Prue (Auburn, Maine) with 15:11 left in the first half.

 

Dombrowski hit three straight 3-pointers and had 11 points in a 13-0 run as Wentworth turned an 11-6 deficit into a 19-11 lead with 9:29 left in the half. The Leopards led 30-21 at halftime.

 

Wentworth put the game away early in the second half, using a 12-1 spurt to start the half opening a 42-22 lead with 14:04 left in the game. Coast Guard scored its first basket of the half on a bucket by freshman Greg Marshall (Gaithersburg, Md.) with 13:55 left.

 

Marshall had a career-high 17 points to lead Coast Guard while senior Eric Hudson (Pasadena, Calif.) and junior Trip Fernandes (Branford, Conn.) led the Bears with seven rebounds each.

 

Coast Guard was just 19 of 71 from the floor, a season-low 26.8 percent while also shooting a season-low 17.6 percent from 3-point range, hitting just three of 17.

 

The Leopards shot 48.2 percent from the field (27-56) including 60.7 percent in the second half (17-28).
