Two-Game Losing Streak Snapped With Win Over City Tech

Two-Game Losing Streak Snapped With Win Over City Tech

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Senior guard Jack Barrett (Reading, Mass.) went 6-for-10 from the floor – including 5-for-8 from behind the three-point arc – for 20 points as the Wentworth men's basketball team completed play at the NYU New Year's Classic with an 82-62 win over City Tech.

The Leopards, who snapped a two-game losing streak and eclipsed the 80-point mark for the second time this season (both times coming in wins) found themselves down by a pair to open the game but used a 17-1 run over the next 7:03 to take a 17-3 lead.  During the run Barrett scored seven points while sophomore guard Brendan Monteiro (Brockton, Mass.) had four points.

City Tech used an 8-0 run, with four of its points coming from sophomore forward Fitzgerald Charles (Jamaica, N.Y.), over the next 2:33 and trimmed the lead to 17-11 with 9:34 to play in the half.  However, that would be as close as the Yellow Jackets would get as Wentworth scored the next 18 points to take a 35-11 lead with just under 5:00 left.  The Leopards took a 44-22 lead into the locker room after shooting 54.5 percent from the floor and holding City Tech to 33.3 percent.

In the second half the Yellow Jackets would pull within 12 points (58-46) with 9:32 remaining, but would get no closer as Wentworth used a 13-1 run to up the lead to 24 and would lead by as much as 25 before the game ended.

Barrett also dished out five assists for the Leopards who also got 13 points from junior guard Keenan Burke-Pitts (Auburn, Mass.) and 12 points from Monteiro.  Junior forward Sam Herrick (Duxbury, Mass.) hauled down a game-high 12 rebounds.  Wentworth held a 46-33 rebounding advantage.  City Tech was paced by junior Gabriel Davis (Brooklyn, N.Y.) who scored 33 of his team's 62 points.

With the win Wentworth improves to 3-5 on the year and hosts Rensselaer Tuesday (Jan. 5) at 7:00 p.m.  City Tech falls to 0-11 and hosts Brooklyn on Wednesday (Jan. 6) at 7:00 p.m.
