Wentworth Notches First Win

Wentworth Notches First Win

MAHWAH, N.J. - Sophomore guard Adam Dombrowski (Groton, Mass.) connected on 8 of 13 shots from the floor, including going 5-for-8 from three-point land, as the Wentworth men's basketball team picked up its first win of the season with an 83-65 win over Berkeley (N.J.) in the first round of the Ramapo College Tip-Off Tournament.

Dombrokwski's career-high 21, coming in the second game he has played in this season, led four double-figure scorers and 11 of his 21 came in the opening stanza when the Leopards found themselves down by two on three separate occasions, including with just under 15 minutes to play.  Wentworth would go on a 16-2 run over the next 3:29 to take a 12-point lead on a sophomore guard Brendan Monteiro (Brockton, Mass.) three-point play with 11:28 left.  During the run junior forward Sam Herrick (Duxbury, Mass.) had eight points, while Monteiro had five.

The Bulldogs cut the lead to seven with 6:21 remaining in the half but an 11-0 run by the Leopards over the next 2:15 pushed the lead to 18 points and Wentworth would lead 45-30 at the half.  Over the first 20 minutes, the Leopards connected on 50 percent of their shots and held Berkeley to 33 percent shooting from the floor.

A14-2 run to open the second half would increase Wentworth's lead to 27 with 14:23 to play.  The Bulldogs whittled the lead down to 11 with 2:14 left, but the Leopards connected on its final seven free throw attempts to round out the scoring.

In addition to Dombrowski, Monteiro had 16 points (including 6-for-6 from the free throw line) and three assists, Herrick had 13 points and eight rebounds, and senior forward Shane West (Saco, Maine) had 11 points and seven rebounds.  Senior forward Matt Abbott (Falmouth, Mass.) had a game-high 12 rebounds.  Berkeley was paced by Donovan Black's (Morristown, N.J.) 25 points on 9-for-12 shooting, while Jarrel Young (Newark, N.J.) added 19 points.

Wentworth (1-2) will take on the host Roadrunners, a 74-63 winner over Yeshiva, for the tournament title Sunday at 3:00 p.m.  Berkeley (0-3) will play Yeshiva in the consolation game at 1:00.
