Four-Goal Third Period Lifts Hockey Team Past WNE

BOSTON, Mass. – Junior defenseman Shaun Jameson's (Long Beach, Calif.) goal with 8:54 remaining in the third period held up as the game winner as the Wentworth hockey team scored four unanswered goals in the third period to take a 4-1 win over Western New England in an ECAC Northeast contest at Matthews Arena.

Western New England jumped on the board first when sophomore Dan Monahan (Monroe, N.Y.) set up freshman Michael Darrar (Monroe Township, N.J.) in front of the net for his first collegiate marker with 2:07 left in the first period. Both teams would have 11 shots in the opening frame; however Darrar's tally would provide the only scoring.

A tightly played second period saw no scoring from either side and the Leopards holding an 8-5 shot advantage. Four of the Leopards' shots came on a flurry during a power play, but Golden Bar sophomore Eric Sorenson (Fairport, N.Y.) held the hosts off the board.

The Leopards began their comeback at 2:33 of the final period when senior Skylur Jameson (Long Beach, Calif.) tipped in a pass in front of the net from freshman Beau Burgau (New Ulm, Minn.). Also assisting on the goal was freshman Mike Domsodi (Kirkland, Que.).

Shaun Jameson's goal came on a one-timer from the right point as he was set up by sophomore Cameron Gibson (Valencia, Calif.) and junior Andrew Yarber (Livonia, Mich.).

Wentworth increased its lead to 3-1 at the 14:07 mark when freshman Seric Kapp (Scheafferstown, Pa.) snuck a shot inside the right post as he was hauled down on his rush to the net. Kapp was set up by junior Reed Rushing (Seattle, Wash.) and freshman Sean McLaughlin (North Billerica, Mass.).

With the Golden Bears pulling Sorensen for an extra attacker, the Leopards netted an empty net marker as freshman Kevin Crowe (Galloway, N.J.) beat a defender after being set up by Skylur Jameson and Gibson.

Freshman Alex Peck (Kirkland, Que.) picked up the win for the Black & Gold, turning aside 27 shots. Sorenson made 33 saves, including 16 over the first two periods, in just over 59 minutes of work. Wentworth held a 37-28 shot advantage, with 18 of those shots coming in the third period.

With the win Wentworth improves to 11-6-1 overall and 4-2-1 in ECAC Northeast play. The Leopards host Salve Regina Sunday afternoon. Western New England dropped its second straight to even its record at 9-9 (4-3). The Golden Bears are at Nichols on Saturday.
