Whittier Pulls Away From Men's Lacrosse

WHITTIER, Calif. – Senior Nick Hernandez (Los Angeles, Calif.) scored five goals and assisted on two others for a seven-point game as the Whittier College men's lacrosse team picked up a 14-6 victory over Wentworth Institute of Technology in non-conference action Tuesday night.

The Poets improve to 2-0 with the victory while the Leopards fall to 0-2.

Senior Alec Paradis (Pelham, N.H.) recorded all six goals for the Black & Gold and put home his first 2:50 after Hernandex had given the hosts a 1-0 lead. The Poets followed up with goals from freshman Chris Burley (San Diego, Calif.) and senior Jonathan Kassity (San Clemente, Calif.) to give them the 3-1 edge at the end of one.

On a man-up situation, Whittier kept its momentum going into the second quarter as Ian Leek (Valley Center, Calif.) set up senior Maxwell Jones (Fircrest, Wash.) and was followed up by three consecutive tallies, including two more goals from Hernandez to put the score at 7-2 at the conclusion of the first half.

Each team tallied one goal each in the third quarter, however Whittier scored the first three goals of the fourth quarter to make it 11-3. Paradis scored twice in a span of 47 seconds to made it 11-5, but the Poets scored the next three goals to seal the win.

Sophomore Adam Dufault (Lexington, Mass.) took the loss and made five saves in the first half, while sophomore Scott Boucher (Salisbury, N.H.) finished out the game and registered 11 saves between the pipes. Senior Tim Parlato (Needham, Mass.) accounted for three caused turnovers and picked up seven ground balls, while five players registered two caused turnovers each. Junior Ty Trebbe (Wilbraham, Mass.) won 8-of-12 face-offs.

Sophomore Alex Cramer (Rocky Hill, Conn.) made 12 saves through 60 minutes for the Poets. Whittier held the 45-34 shot advantage.

Wentworth will face Aurora at Whittier on Wednesday March 9 and is set for a 10:00 p.m. (EST) face off.
