BOSTON, Mass. - A six goal performance by sophomore Graham Davis (Crofton, Md.) lifted MIT over the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team, 14-6, in a non-conference matchup at Sweeney Field on Tuesday afternoon.
MIT improves to 4-0, while Wentworth falls to 0-5.
The Engineers overcame an early two goal deficit on back-to-back goals by freshman Jake Stein (Vienna, Va.) to take the 4-3 lead at the end of the first. A freshman Jack Zaylor (Hanover, Mass.) unassisted net put the Leopards within one with 2:02 remaining in the first half.
MIT came out in the second half with offensive fire, tallying five more goals in a span of 10 minutes and put the Engineers ahead 11-4. Wentworth remained scoreless through much of the third quarter until senior Nick Parent (Windham, N.H.) notched a goal with one tick left to put the score at 11-5.
Freshman Sean Brennan (Stony Point, N.H.) set up senior Tim Parlato (Needham, Mass.) to cut MIT's lead in half at 12-6, but that was all the offense they would get. The Engineers tacked on two more goals to take the 14-6 victory.
Sophomore Adam Dufault (Lexington, Mass.) took the loss, making 10 saves through 60 minutes. Sophomore Kevin Butler (Jefferson, Mass.) and Parent led the Leopards offense with two goals apiece. Both Brennan and senior James Caldwell (New Milford, Conn.) had two caused turnovers. Parlato and junior Sean Farmer (Billerica, Mass.) had five ground balls each while freshman Peer Andersson (Madison, N.J.) and junior Ty Trebbe (Wilbraham, Mass.) combined to win 13 face-offs.
Senior Eric Bartell (San Diego, Caif.) earned the win for the Engineers, saving seven shots. Along with Davis, Stolenzberg led the MIT offense followed up with five helpers.
MIT held the 41-26 shot advantage, as well as ground balls (38-35) while Wentworth had a 14-9 advantage at the X. Wentworth went 0-for-4 in man-up opportunities, while MIT went 1-for-3.
Wentworth travels to Lasell on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. as MIT faces Gordon at home on Thursday at 4:00 p.m.
