SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Senior Jon Bota (Mahopac, N.Y.) and junior Frank Medlicott (Stanwood, Wash.) each found the back of the net three times to help pace the 18th-ranked Western New England University men's lacrosse team to an 18-4 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology in a Commonwealth Coast Conference contest played at Golden Bear Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
With the win the Golden Bears improve to 6-3 overall and 2-0 in CCC play while the Leopards slip to 1-8 (0-2).
The hosts silenced the Wentworth offense through the first 30 minutes. The Leopards found themselves down 4-0 at the end of the first thanks to two tallies from Bota and watched the lead increase as a seven-goal second put the Golden Bears up 11-0 at the half.
Senior Alec Paradis (Pelham, N.H.) notched Wentworth's first two markers of the game at bring the score to 12-2 with one quarter remaining. Sophomore Nick Sisoian's (Duxbury, Mass.) goal at the 4:01 mark capped off six consecutive goals from the Golden Bears to bring the score to 18-2. With two minutes remaining in the fourth, Wentworth scored two more goals as junior Mike Coakley (Flemington, N.J.) and senior Tim Parlato (Needham, Mass.) rounded out the scoring.
Bota finished with three goals and one assist and Medlicott scored three times on three shots. Three players had a pair of helpers each and Drew Trebbe (Longmeadow, Mass.) scooped up five ground balls.
Paradis scored two goals for Wentworth while Parlato scooped up six ground balls and freshman Peter Andersson (Madison, N.J.) was 7-of-12 at the X.
Sophomore Steven Kerr (Hopkinton, Mass.) made nine saves in the win. Sophomores Scott Boucher (Salisbury, N.H.) and Adam Dufault (Lexington, Mass.) made five and three saves, respectively, as each played one half. Wentworth had a 40-36 shot advantage while Western New England had the edge in ground balls (37-31) and face-offs (13-11). The Golden Bears were also 24-of-28 in clearing attempts.
Both Wentworth and Western New England are in action on Wednesday. Wentworth returns home to face Becker at 7:30 p.m., while Western New England heads to Roger Wiliams at 7:00 p.m.
