Third Quarter Surge Lifts Men's Lacrosse Over Moravian

DAVENPORT, Fla. – Sophomore Dolan McCarthy (Hyde Park, Mass.) found the back of the net five times to lead the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team over Moravian 14-8 at the Northeast Regional Park in Davenport, Fla. The Leopards close out their spring break trip on a 2-0 note, and head back to Boston at 3-0 overall.

An assisted goal from Moravian sophomore Dominick Guerreri (York, Pa.) put the opposition up one, before Leopards leading scorer Kyle Doner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) tied things up 1-1 on a dish from junior Sean Brennan (Stony Point, N.Y.). Doner responded to a goal from Mark Laratta (Budd Lake, N.J.) with his second of the game with just under 10 minutes left in the first quarter, before McCarthy started his offensive surge 55 seconds later, as Wentworth held a 3-2 lead after the first 15 minutes.

Three man-up goals put Moravian out front in the second quarter, 5-4, including a goal apiece from Laratta and Connor Hull (Kings Park, N.Y.) just 52 seconds apart. The Leopards responded with back-to-back goals from senior Kevin Butler (Jefferson, Mass.) and an unassisted tally from freshman Jack O'Neill (Groton, Mass.) to regain the lead 6-5, as both teams headed into the halftime break.

Senior goalie Scott Boucher (Salisbury, N.H.) steered the Wentworth defense with eight saves in the third quarter, and limited Moravian to its five goals out of halftime. Junior Jacob Eldred (Goffstown, N.H.), freshman Ben Coakley (Flemington, N.J.), and McCarthy (3) combined for five goals in the stretch, as Wentworth held a commanding 11-5 lead heading into the final quarter.

McCarthy capped his offensive rush with a man-up goal to open the fourth, before junior AJ Cioffi (Coopersburg, Pa.) broke the scoring drought for the Greyhounds. Doner and senior Jake Ollila (Goffstown, N.H.) scored back-to-back goals for the 14-6 lead, as the Greyhounds were unable to close the gap despite two final goals from Hull and Cade Siddron.

Senior goalie Adam Dufault (Lexington, Mass.) and Boucher split time in the cage for Wentworth, with Dufault collecting the win with four saves in the first 30 minutes. Boucher recorded nine saves in second-half relief, including a pivotal eight-save performance in the third quarter to keep Moravian at bay.

Wentworth held a 34-29 ground ball advantage over Moravian, including six from Brennan and five from freshman Paul Sender (Closter, N.J.). Senior Brad Krueger (Chelmsford, Mass.) and O'Neill (Groton, Mass.) collected four ground balls apiece, while Sender went 16-25 from the faceoff X.

Wentworth is back in action on Tuesday for its home opener with MIT at 4:00 p.m.
