Curry Pulls Away From Men's Lacrosse

BOSTON, Mass. – Senior Tom Cashin (Boxford, Mass.) scored six goals and assisted on two others as the Curry College men's lacrosse team defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology, 14-10, in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Saturday afternoon.

With the win the Colonels improve to 9-5 overall and 4-3 in CCC play while the Leopards fall to 6-7 (1-6).

Junior Jacob Eldred (Goffstown, N.H.) put the hosts on the board with a goal with 9:28 remaining in the opening quarter. Sophomore Andrew DeLeary (Wakefield, Mass.) evened the score with a man-up tally with 5:55 left. Nearly three and a half minutes later sophomore Riley Smith (Plaistow, N.H.) gave Wentworth a 3-2 lead, however, the ensuing faceoff saw junior Zach White (Milford, Conn.) gain possession and feed Cashin to tie the game at 2-all. Sophomore Jake Stebbins (Colchester, Conn.) put the Colonels ahead, 3-2 before a junior Zach Tomaszek (Milford, Conn.) marker with 65 ticks left evened the score at 3-all.

Curry outscored Wentworth by a 5-2 margin in the second quarter, including scoring three times in a span of 27 seconds with Cashin tallying twice and junior Devin Newell (Medford, Mass.) scoring a goal and an assist. Senior Kevin Butler (Jefferson, Mass.) and freshman Ben Coakley (Flemington, N.J.) scored for the Black & Gold, who found themselves trailing 8-5 at the break.

Cashin scored twice around a Smith goal, giving the visitors a 10-6 lead with 5:50 left in the third quarter. Eldred and Smith brought the Leopards to within a pair at 10-8 with 1:30 left in the quarter before Cashin's sixth marker of the game started the fourth quarter scoring as he gave Curry an 11-8 lead with 14:27 remaining.

Eldred brought the Leopards back within a pair with 12:38 left in the contest, however, Curry extended its lead to 14-9 with three straight goals. Coakley finished the scoring, tallying a man-up marker with 1:30 remaining.

DeLeary finished with two goals and an assist while Stebbins and senior Matt Serra (Haverhill, Mass.) had two goals apiece for Curry. White won 21-of-28 face-offs and scooped up 13 ground balls.

Eldred scored three times and added an assist while Smith scored three goals and Coakley had two goals and an assist for Wentworth Freshman Jake Renzi (Acton, Mass.) had a team-high six ground balls and caused a game-high three turnovers.

Junior Josh Teller (Milford, Conn.) made 11 saves in the win. Senior Adam Dufault (Lexington, Mass.) was saddled with the loss, making five saves in the first half. Classmate Scott Boucher (Salisbury, N.H.) made five second-half saves. Curry had a 41-31 shot advantage and a 46-34 edge in ground balls.

Both teams finish the regular season on Tuesday. Wentworth hosts the University of New England while Curry hosts Salve Regina.
