BOSTON, Mass. – Senior Kara Pepper (Wyckoff, N.J.) led the Fighting Scot offense going 6-for-8 with a double, triple, four RBI, a walk, and scoring five runs, as Gordon College swept Wentworth Institute of Technology in a Commonwealth Coast Conference softball doubleheader on Friday afternoon.
The Fighting Scots took the first game 8-4 and then captured the second 21-6 (six innings).
An RBI single by junior Marissa Meenan (Wayne, Pa.) put the first run on the board in the top of the first in the first game. A fielder's choice gave the visitors a 2-0 lead after one. After a walk by freshman first baseman Megan Berryman (Middleboro, Mass.) in the bottom of the third, senior shortstop Sam Curran (Quincy, Mass.) hit a home run to left field to tie the game at two.
Meenan led off the fifth with a solo home run to left center to begin a four-run inning that would eventually be enough to top the Leopards. The Leopards added a run in the bottom of the fifth with a sacrifice fly by freshman Vanessa Weymouth (Fremont, N.H.) to score Curran. The final Leopard run came in the bottom of the sixth with another sac fly.
Freshman Emily Kline (Park Ridge, N.J.) went the distance to earn the win, giving up two earned runs while striking out nine. Junior Heather Pinkston (Concord, Calif.) started for Wentworth, going four innings giving up five runs off six hits with a strikeout.
In game two, Gordon jumped ahead early scoring four runs in the first off two hits. Wentworth responded in the bottom half with two runs off two hits to make it 4-2. Freshman Sarah Ryder (Telford, Pa.) helped start the scoring in the third inning with an RBI single. An RBI groundout gave Gordon another run to finish the inning with two. Wentworth scored in the bottom half, as a Weymouth groundout scored Curran to give the Leopards its third run of the game. After Gordon tacked on a pair in the fourth and three runs in the fifth, Wentworth scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth off two hits. Curran notched an RBI with a double to right field and eventually scored on a throwing error. A Ryder double kicked off what would be a 10 run sixth inning for the Fighting Scots, as they went on 21-6.
Freshman Abigail Knowlton (Deer Isle, Maine) earned the win in five innings of work, giving up five earned runs and striking out three. Junior Siobhan Baker (South Portland, Maine) got the loss for the Leopards, going four innings and striking out a pair.
Curran went 6-for-6 at the dish with a double, triple, and home run, along with three RBI, five runs, a walk, and three stolen bags.
Wentworth (2-14, 0-8 CCC) travels to Roger Williams on Saturday for an afternoon conference doubleheader. Gordon (3-14, 2-4 CCC) returns home Saturday to host University of New England.
