BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University softball team scored 32 runs on 26 hits and were paced by junior Taylor Messier's (Cranston, R.I.) eight hits and four RBI and the Hawks swept Wentworth Institute of Technology in a Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader. Roger Williams took the first game 16-1 and completed the sweep with a 16-8 win in the nightcap.
With the two wins the Hawks improve to 8-10 overall and 4-5 in CCC play while the Leopards fall to 2-16 (0-10).
Game one was all Roger Williams as the hosts scored six times in the bottom of the first inning with the big blow coming off the bat of sophomore Mikaela Grosso (West Warwick, R.I.), who had a three-run double. An inning later Roger Williams tacked on four runs with junior Delaney Burns (Hudson, N.H.) and senior Alana Peoples each providing RBI singles and two other runs scoring as a result of a pair of Leopard errors.
Wentworth scored its lone run in the top of the third as freshman Haley Sabino (Topsfield, Mass.) led off by reaching on an error and with one out went to second on a senior Anne Harris (Germantown, Md.) sacrifice. Sabino came around to score on a freshman Mergan Berryman (Middleboro, Mass.) double.
The Hawks scored three times in the bottom of the third and added three more in the fourth, with Peoples delivering a two-run double in the fourth inning.
Junior Megan Maliga (Suffield, Conn.) picked up the win (5-4), allowing one unearned run and just two hits. Messier, junior Chelsea Boulrisse (Bourne, Mass.), and People each had three hits while Burns and Grosso drove in four runs apiece.
Berryman and junior Karsyn Sawyer (Chatham, N.Y.) had Wentworth's hits. Senior Sam Curran (Quincy, Mass.) and junior Heather Pinkston (Concord, Calif.) each pitched two innings.
The Hawks started game two like they started game one, scoring six runs in the bottom of the first inning, thanks in part to four Wentworth errors. Burns hit a two-run home run and Messier had a two-run single in the inning.
Wentworth took an 8-6 lead in the top of the third, scoring eight times on six hits. Senior Liz Glavin (Ipswich, Mass.) had a two-run double, Sawyer had an RBI double, Sabino and Berryman each drove in two with doubles, and Curran had an RBI single as the Leopards sent 13 batters to the plate in the inning.
Roger Williams cut the lead to 8-7 in the home half of the inning, scoring on an error, and tallied five runs in the fourth to take a 12-8 lead as Messier helped the cause with a two-run double. Sophomore Meredith Moise (North Reading, Mass.) had a two-run double and junior Veronica Alicea (Trumbull, Conn.) drove in a run in the fifth and the Hawks won the game with an RBI single from Boulrisse in the sixth inning.
Moise picked up the win (1-1) while Messier was 5-for-5 with four RBI at the plate.
Pinkston was tagged with the loss. Curran was 3-for-4 and Berryman was 2-for-4. Berryman, Glavin, and Sabino drove in two runs each in the loss.
