BOSTON, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology softball team dropped a pair of games to Emerson College on Saturday afternoon in its first doubleheader on New England turf. The Leopards dip to 4-7 overall and will play their next game on Sweeney Field vs Newbury College on March 20th.
Game One – Emerson 10, Wentworth 2 (Six Innings)
Emerson set the tone in its first chance at the plate at Rotch Field, as Calli Pratt (Dighton, Mass.) hit a bases-loaded single, before Alena Jones (Woodinville, Wash.) sent two runners home for the 3-0 lead. Pratt rounded home on a wild pitch for an early 4-0 after a full inning.
The Lions added a trio of runs before Wentworth broke the shutout in the top of the fifth, as Alyssa Lohr (Fairport, N.Y.) started things off with a single to center field. Classmate Brianna Beverly (Pawcatuck, Conn.) followed with a single to left, as the Lions' defense retired Lohr the lead runner, but Alexandra Pina (Cumberland, R.I.) loaded the bases on a hit-by-pitch for classmate Katie Verreault (Scarborough, Maine). Verreault hit a deep single to right center for an RBI, before Ceilidh Higgins (Medway, Mass.) drove in Wentworth's second run of the day. Emerson added three more runs in the sixth, however, to reach the eight-run mercy.
The Leopards scattered four hits in the effort from Verreault, Higgins, Lohr, and Beverly. Sophomore Kayla DeMedeiros (South Dartmouth, Mass.) suffered the loss in the circle with nine earned runs, 13 hits, and four walks, while striking out one.
Game Two – Emerson 8, Wentworth 0 (Five Innings)
Emerson kept the bats swinging in the nightcap and booked four runs on three hits in the bottom of the second. Karagan Knowles (Tucson, Ariz.) was lights out on the hill, and gave up just a single hit (a double from Verreault in the fourth inning) with four strikeouts to backstop the Lions.
Lindsey Lowe (Porter Ranch, Calif.) hit for extra bases in the win, joining Kallista Leonardos (El Granada, Calif.) with a multi-RBI performance.
Verreault pitched to her first collegiate decision for the Leopards with six K's and eight earned runs.
