Women's Soccer Wins Second in a Row

Women's Soccer Wins Second in a Row

BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore midfielder Elizabeth Somma (Windham, Maine) tallied a pair of goals, while senior forward Sarah Norkiewicz (Dracut, Mass.) and senior midfielder Jess Kruger (Belmont, N.H.) each had a goal and an assist as the Wentworth women's soccer team won its second straight game with a 6-0 win over Nichols in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference game played on Sweeney Field.

Norkiewicz gave the Leopards, who won back-to-back games for the first time this season, the only goal they would need at the 5:47 mark when she gained control of a loose ball in front of the net and fired a shot to the left side.  At 11:11 sophomore defender Danielle Weiler (Becker, Mass.) increased the lead to 2-0 when her shot from 18 yards out took a bounce over Bison sophomore Maureen Lynch's (Holbrook, Mass.), who had come out to play the ball, head and into the right side of the goal.

Somma tallied Wentworth's next two markers to give the hosts a 4-0 halftime lead.  At 33:44 she took a shot from 30 yards out that found the top center of the net, and, at 35:49, she one-timed a free kick from classmate Deborah Lesky (Newton, Mass.) into the right side of the net.

At 53:30 Norkiewicz would send a pass across the box to Kruger, who would make it a 5-0 game before Kruger set up freshman Jenelle Wolff (Portland, Conn.) to round out the scoring.

Sophomore Jess Gardner (Wilbraham, Mass.) made eight saves to pick up her first shutout of the season, while Lynch turned aside nine shots.  Wentworth held a 21-16 shot advantage.

With the win the Leopards improve to 5-9-1 overall and keep their conference tournament hopes alive with a 4-6-1 league record.  Wentworth hosts Anna Maria on Saturday.  The Bison saw their two-game win streak and three-game unbeaten streak come to an end, falling to 10-5-1 (5-5-1 TCCC).  Nichols is at the University of New England on Saturday.
