Women's Soccer Closes Out Season With 4-1 Win

BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore midfielder Elizabeth Somma (Windham, Maine) tallied a pair of goals and an assist to lead the Wentworth women's soccer team to a 4-1 win over Colby-Sawyer in the season finale for both squads.

Wentworth carried play for most of the first half and held an 8-1 shot advantage and a 7-0 corner kick advantage, but neither team would be able to find the back of the net, as the first half ended 0-0.

Somma's first marker of the evening came at 51:04 when freshman midfielder Ashley Cook (San Diego, Calif.) served a corner kick from the right corner area, which Somma one-timed to the upper right of the net.  Nearly five minutes later Somma tallied her second of the night when she put home the rebound of a junior midfielder Lauren Vargas (Warren, R.I.) saved shot at 55:56.

With just under 20 minutes remaining, Somma fed a pass to senior forward Sarah Norkiewicz (Dracut, Mass.), whose shot from just inside the box would hit the crossbar and bounce down and beyond the goal line.

The Chargers got their lone goal of the evening at 80:32 when sophomore midfielder Emily Brown (Rye, N.H.) took a shot from the top of the box that Leopard sophomore keeper Jess Gardner (Wilbraham, Mass.) initially saved, but the rebound snuck inside the left post.

Wentworth sophomore midfielder Deborah Lesky (Newton, Mass.) closed out the scoring when she rifled a direct kick from 25 yards out that found the upper right corner, just below where the crossbar and post meet.

Gardner made four saves for Wentworth, while sophomore Shalyn Spencer (Natick, Mass.) made seven stops for Colby-Sawyer.  The Leopards held a 20-7 shot advantage for the game.

In order to earn a berth in The Commonwealth Coast Conference Tournament, Wentworth had to win and Curry had to win at Nichols.  With the Bison prevailing, 3-1, the Leopards' season ends with an overall mark of 7-9-1 (6-6-1 TCCC).  Colby-Sawyer sees its season come to an end with a 5-12-2 (4-8-1 TCCC) record.
