Six-Run Third Inning Lifts Baseball Past Mass. Maritime

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. – Junior Tyler Weninger's (Chandler, Ariz.) two-run triple highlighted a six-run third inning rally that lifted Wentworth to a 7-4 non-league college baseball victory over Massachusetts Maritime Thursday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field.

The visiting Leopards (10-3), who matched their win total of last season in just 13 games in the 2017 campaign, sent nine batters to the plate in their third inning uprising, as Weninger's two-run three-bagger was followed by an RBI double down the left field line by senior Jimmy Temte (Northboro, Mass.). A bases loaded walk, a double play grounder and a wild pitch accounted for remaining three tallies of the frame for Wentworth, which extended its edge to 7-0 in the sixth on sophomore Jake Smith's (Orange, Conn.) first career home run, a solo shot over the left field fence.

Mass. Maritime (5-5) got a pair of runs back in the sixth on an RBI double by freshman Jackson Simone (Seattle, Wash.) that was followed by a run-scoring single off the bat of senior Aidan Desrosiers (North Attleboro, Mass.), and the Buccaneers crept back to within three in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI double by senior Jake Petruzzelli (Abington, Mass.), who then scored on Desrosiers' triple. The hosts had the tying run at the plate with one out in the ninth, but a double play grounder ended the threat and gave the Leopards their third straight win.

Weninger and Temte each had two of Wentworth's eight hits on the day, as sophomore Mike Callagee (Emerson, N.J.) earned his second victory of the season by scattering four hits and striking out a pair over the first six innings for the visitors. Senior Aaron Denis (Dover, N.H.) worked around a pair of hits in recording the final four outs to pick up his first save for the Leopards, as he induced the twin-killing that ended the contest.

Petruzzelli and Desrosiers collected two hits each as part of an eight-hit attack in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, as freshman Alec Schenning (Fallston, Md.) fanned a pair over two-plus innings of work in his first career start on the mound for the Buccaneers.

Wentworth, which had a Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader against Roger Williams postponed for Saturday, will play a twinbill against Endicott on Sunday. The location and start time will be determined this weekend.
