HARTFORD, Conn. – Sophomore forward Michael Hawkrigg (Toronto, Ont.) ripped a slap shot that deflected off the post and in the goal to give the Trinity College Bantams a 4-3 lead win over the Wentworth Institute of Technology Leopards in men's ice hockey action this afternoon. Trinity improves to 5-1 overall with its third straight victory, while the Leopards fall to 3-6-1 on the year.
Trinity jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead on a goal by freshman forward Sean Orlando (Ivyland, Pa.) before Wentworth went on a 3-0 scoring spree to close the first and open the second periods. Junior Sean McLaughlin (North Billerica, Mass.), senior Andrew Yarber (Livonia, Mich.), and sophomore Mike Cox (Marlborough, Mass.) each netted goals in the stretch that put the Bantams in a hole. McLaughlin's goal came just 45 ticks after the Bantams had taken a 1-0 lead, while Yarber gave the Black & Gold a 2-1 lead midway through the period. Cox would put Wentworth ahead, 3-1, at the 2:34 mark of the middle period.
Midway through the second, Trinity sophomore forward Elie Vered (Ottawa, Ont.) buried a shot in the top left corner of Wentworth's net to put Trinity back within a goal. Trinity remained in striking distance, and came up with a game-tying one-timer by sophomore Joe Horak (St. Louis, Mo.) on a neatly placed puck by Hawkrigg, 6:03 into the final period, knotting the game at 3-3. Hawkrigg, Trinity's points leader with 13 points in six games, then delivered the game-winning power play goal to cap the comeback.
In his second consecutive start, sophomore Nathaniel Heilbron (West Vancouver, B.C.) made 25 stops to move to 2-0 in net for the Bantams. Sophomore goalie Joel Miller (Calgary, Alta.) finished with 24 saves in the game for the Leopards. All of Trinity's goals would come on the power play as the Bantams converted 4-of-8 opportunities. Trinity and Wentworth finished with 28 shots apiece in the game.
The Leopards are idle until December 10 when they travel to Stonehill.
