Men's Soccer Shut Out by Mass. Maritime

BOSTON, Mass. – Senior Adam Vieira (New Bedford, Mass.) tallied a pair of second half goals and classmate Brett Young (Falmouth, Mass.) earned his third shutout of the season with a seven save performance as Mass. Maritime blanked Wentworth, 3-0, in a non-league contest played on Sweeney Field.

Neither team was able to gain momentum through the early part of the contest, despite both teams having scoring opportunities. It wasn't until the 39:44 mark that the Buccaneers got the only goal they would need when junior Asa Mills (Westport, Mass.) put home a loose ball after a scrum off a corner kick.

The Leopards had a golden opportunity to score off the second half kickoff, but sophomore midfielder Adam Rhodes' (Litchfield, Conn.) shot hit the top of the crossbar and sailed out of play just 18 seconds into the second stanza.

At the 49:49 mark Vieira notched his first marker of the season when senior Tim McDonough had a throw in from the far side. Vieira put an attempt on net that was initially deflected by Wentworth senior John Longo (Needham, Mass.), but went in, just inside the far post. The Leopards had a pair of quality chances in the 78th minute but Young came up with the save on both occasions.

Vieira added his second of the game – and second of the season – with just over six minutes left when he took a pass from junior Hieu Nguyen (Weymouth, Mass.) and beat Longo to the left side.

Young made four of his seven saves in the second half, while Longo also made seven stops on the evening. The Buccaneers held a slim, 19-17 advantage on shots while Wentworth had an 8-5 edge in corner kicks.

With the win Mass. Maritime improves to 3-0-1 on the year and opens MASCAC play on Saturday at home against Westfield State. Wentworth drops to 0-4-1 and opens Commonwealth Coast Conference play – also at home – against Eastern Nazarene.
