WPI Blanks Men's Soccer

Worcester, Mass. – Goalkeepers Jeff Wong (Millington, N.J.) and Michael DeMarco (Staten Island, N.Y.) combined for a shutout as WPI defeated Wentworth 4-0 in a non-conference men's soccer contest at Alumni Field on Monday night. With the win, the Engineers improve to 9-4 while Wentworth falls to 1-10-2 on the season.

Chris Ciampa (Danvers, Mass.) got the Engineers' scoring started at the 19:25 mark when he was taken down in the box and awarded a penalty kick. He proceeded to place the ball in the bottom right corner of the net for his sixth goal of the year giving WPI a 1-0 lead.  With the goal the junior eclipsed the 50 point milestone and now has 51 for his career.

WPI extended its lead to 2-0 with 1:59 left in the first half when Sam Russell (Glastonbury, Conn.) placed a perfectly crossed ball onto the foot of Joe Rucco (Whitesboro, N.Y.), who flicked the ball past the goaltender for his fourth goal of the season.

Wentworth had their best scoring chance at 66:24 when Tyler McQuesten (Tewksbury, Mass.) fired a shot but the shot sailed wide.

The Engineers tallied their third goal of the game on a header from Connor King (Douglas, Mass.) midway through the second half. Christopher Murray (Canton, Mass.) placed a nifty cross to the top of the goalie's crease to an unattended King, who headed the ball to the back of the net at 69:03 for his second marker of the season.

Sophomore Tynan MacLeod (Groton, Mass.) registered the first goal of his career at 72:56 when he broke past the defenders on a beautifully placed ball from Rucco and chipped the ball over the Leopard goalkeeper's head.  MacLeod nearly had a second goal but was repelled by a great save by Tyler Carlson (Mansfield, Mass.) in the 84th minute.

Wong made four saves for WPI over the first 76:52 while DeMarco chipped in with a stop in his 13:08 of work.  It marked the fifth shutout of the season for the Crimson and Gray.

John Longo (Needham, Mass.) and Carlson teamed up to tally four saves for the visitors, who got two shots apiece from Jake Buzzell (Haverhill, Mass.) and McQuesten.

The Engineers enjoyed a 16-11 edge in shots in the game, which was played in a heavy second half rain and attempted four of the match's seven corner kicks.

WPI plays its third game in a stretch that features four contests in seven days on Wednesday at home against Mass Maritime at 7:00 p.m.  Wentworth is also back in action on Wednesday, heading to Biddeford, Maine to face the University of New England at 6:30 p.m.
