Wentworth Wins Second Straight With 9-1 Triumph Over Lasell

WALTHAM, Mass. – Junior Ben Danker (Branford, Conn.) went 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI to pace an 11-hit offensive attack, while sophomore Adam Farrar (Newport, Vt.) hurled seven shutout innings as the Wentworth baseball team downed Lasell, 9-1, in a non-conference game played at Brandeis' Stein Diamond.

Wentworth struck first in the top of the first inning when Danker singled in senior Pete Oggeri (Sandy Hook, Conn.), who had delivered a two-out triple to center.  The host Lasers had a golden opportunity to get on the board in the second inning, as Lasell loaded the bases with one out.  However, Farrar got a strikeout and a groundout to end the threat and the inning.

The Leopards broke the game open with a five-run fifth inning.  Danker delivered a one out, RBI single which plated sophomore Conner Flisnik (Marcy, N.Y.) who drew a one-out walk.  Junior Mike Diodato (Asbury, N.J.) would double in Danker and would eventually score on a balk.  Junior Jake McManus (Hopkinton, N.H.), who walked with two outs, would steal second and would move to third on the balk that scored Diodato scored when freshman Ryan Delgado (Wareham, Mass.) reached on an error.  Delgado, who stole second, came around to score on a freshman Alex Wong (Lewiston, Maine) RBI single.

Holding a 6-0 lead, Wentworth added a run in the sixth when Oggeri would score after an errant throw on a steal attempt by Danker.  The Leopards added two runs in the eighth when Oggeri scored on a wild pitch and Diodato scored on an RBI double from McManus.

Down to their final strike, the Lasers broke up the shutout when freshman Bobby Stachura (Middletown, Conn.) singled home classmate Jake Salkovitz (Brockton, Mass.), who delivered a two out, pinch-hit double.

Farrar scattered eight hits over seven innings while matching his career high of eight strikeouts and walked just one batter to pick up his first win of 2010 (1-0).  Sophomore Kyle Cruz (Burlington, Conn.) pitched a perfect eighth, while senior Matt Vezina (Uxbridge, Mass.) allowed one run on two hits in the ninth.  Sophomore Matt Pitts (Stoneham, Mass.) took the loss for the Lasers, as he fell to 0-2.  He allowed one run on three hits and walked one in three innings.

With the win Wentworth improves to 8-4 and resumes The Commonwealth Coast Conference play Saturday with a doubleheader at Endicott.  Lasell dips to 0-6 and opens Great Northeast Athletic Conference play Saturday with a doubleheader at home against Norwich.
