Corsairs Down Leopards, 16-6

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's baseball team scored 16 runs in their first four at bats and went on to defeat visiting Wentworth, 16-6,  in a non-conference game at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Wednesday

 

The Leopards took a 1-0 lead on an unearned run in the top of the first inning before the Corsairs came back with four runs in their half of the inning. Senior center fielder Jeff Macchi (Franklin, MA/Franklin HS) singled home a run to tie the game, and junior designated hitter Matt Ryan (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge HS) promptly untied it with a three-run homer, giving the Corsairs the lead for good.

 

Junior catcher Zak Talis (Lynnfield, MA/Lynnfield HS) hit a two-run home run and sophomore third baseman John Granahan (Hanover, MA/Hanover HS/Southern Maine) singled home a run in a five-run third.

 

Senior designated hitter Anthony Carbone (Goshen, CT/Wamogo Regional HS) doubled home a run and freshman right fielder Alex Wong (Lewiston, ME/Lewiston HS) drove home a run with an infield out in a three-run fourth for the Leopards, but UMD put the game away by scoring seven times in the bottom of the fourth.

 

Talis doubled home one run and drove home another with a sacrifice fly, junior first baseman Anthony Fiorita (North Reading, MA/St. John's Prep) singled home two more, freshman right fielder Nick Fuller (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) also had a sacrifice fly, and sophomore second baseman Dan DeMello (Taunton, MA/Taunton HS) and junior shortstop Ryan McDermott (Pembroke, MA/Pembroke HS) walked with the bases loaded.

 

Macchi had four hits and Fiorita added three for the Corsairs, while Talis had four RBIs and Ryan had three.

 

Freshman Mike St. Martin (Worcester, MA/Doherty HS) pitched the first five innings for UMass Dartmouth and earned the victory, improving to 2-1. Sophomore Kyle Cruz (Burlington, CT/Lewis Mills HS) started for Wentworth and took the loss, falling to 3-1.

 

UMass Dartmouth improved to 13-7 with the victory, while Wentworth fell to 20-8 with the defeat.  The Corsairs will return to action when they host Clark Thursday. The Leopards will visit Salve Regina Saturday.
