Late Run Lifts Suffolk Past Men's Basketball

BOSTON, Mass. – Gradate student William Rowe (Reston, Va.) was one of three Suffolk University men's basketball student-athletes to score in double figures as he tallied 15 points on 7-for-7 shooting from the floor as the Rams defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology, 65-58, in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Tuesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After falling behind by a pair on two occasions early in the game, Wentworth used a 17-4 run to take a 21-10 lead after a sophomore Tyler Stewart (East Taunton, Mass.) layup with 8:59 remaining. Using a 20-6 run of its own, Suffolk took a 30-27 lead after a three pointer from sophomore Cole LeVangie (Whitman, Mass.) with 1:21 left. Stewart responded with a layup to cut the lead to one but Rowe beat the buzzer with a layup of his own to give the Rams a 32-29 halftime lead.
  • The Rams upped their lead to five on the opening possession of the second half on a jumper from graduate student Conor Creane (Milford, Conn.) before a second-chance basket from Stewart timed the lead to three. Stewart hit one of two free throws and senior Jack Schaake (Hampton, N.H.) made a pair from the line to tie the game at 34-all with 16:40 left.
  • Suffolk grabbed a six-point lead after a three-point play from Rowe but Schaake scored four points and sophomore Nico Rosich (Chicago, Ill.) added two to tie the game at 44-all with 10:31 left. Sophomore Jack Connell (Walpole, Mass.) tied the game again with a pair of free throws and sophomore Nathaniel Smith (Beacon Falls, Conn.) hit two from the line for the seventh tie of the game (48-48).
  • Connell hit a jumper and senior Sam Swift (Arlington, Mass.) hit one of two free throws with 6:33 left, giving the Black & Gold a 51-48 edge with 6:33 remaining. However, the Rams used a 13-1 run over the next three and a half minutes and took a 61-52 lead after a sophomore Keenan Robertson (Rochester, N.Y.) layup with 3:05 left. The Leopards cut the lead to seven on two occasions, however were unable to get over the hump.
  • Stewart led all scorers with 17 points to go along with a career-high 17 rebounds. Connell (15) and Schaake (14) also scored in double figures for Wentworth.

SERIES NOTES:

  • Tonight marked the 18th all-time meeting between the two teams. Suffolk leads, 11-7.
