Strong Second Half Lifts Roger Williams Past Men's Basketball

BRISTOL, R.I. – Junior Nate Lopes (Scituate, Mass.) recorded a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds and classmate Mac Annus (Belmont, Mass.) added 18 of his own on 7-of-9 shooting as the Roger Williams University men's basketball team defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology, 77-53, in Commonwealth Coast Conference play Wednesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After falling behind 4-2 to open the game, Wentworth used a 6-2 spurt and took an 8-4 lead on a senior Thomas Hacker (Averill Park, N.Y.) jumper with 14:43 left in the opening frame. With the Leopards leading, 10-7, Roger Williams used an 11-2 run to take a 19-12 lead when Lopes hit a three with 6:41 left.
  • Six straight points – with four coming from junior Sam Goy (Derry, N.H.) – brought Wentworth back within one just over two minutes later. Annus gave the hosts a three-point lead before senior Sam Swift (Arlington, Mass.) tied the game with a three. Swifts trifecta started a 5-1, half-ending run for the Black & Gold, who led, 26-22 at the break.
  • Using a 26-5 run, Roger Williams took a 48-31 lead with 12:37 left after a three pointer from freshman Max Manjos (Monroe, Conn.). After a Wentworth timeout, the Hawks added to their lead with a 16-4 run to pull away from the Leopards.
  • Goy led the Leopards with 11 points, while sophomore Tyler Stewart (East Taunton, Mass.) and sophomore Niko Rosich (Chicago, Ill.) each scored eight points. Stewart grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.

SERIES NOTES:

  • Tonight was the 70th all-time meeting between the two teams. Roger Williams leads, 50-20.
