Men's Basketball Shoots High over Roger Williams on Senior Day

BOSTON, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology men's basketball team shot a terrific 62.5% from the floor Saturday as the Black & Gold downed Roger Williams on their Senior Day by a 95-65 in Commonwealth Coast Conference action.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Hawks started the game on a 9-2 run that sparked from a three-pointer from junior Harrison Latimer (Topsfield, Mass.). After four points on the board for the Leopards, freshman Max Manjos (Monroe, Conn.) sank a three to mark a 12-6 score. Sophomore Tyler Stewart (East Taunton, Mass.) answered with a basket of his own and sandwiched a Hawks' basket soon thereafter to mark a 14-10 lead for the visitors. The two teams traded baskets until a Stewart layup eventually tied the score at 18-all.
  • The two teams swapped scores to a 28-26 score in favor of the Hawks just before a layup by senior Conor Rubenskas (Bridgewater, Mass.) tied the score at 28 apiece. After a three for the Hawks, the Leopards rattled off four successful free throws, two each from Stewart and sophomore Jack Connell (Walpole, Mass.) to mark a 32-31 lead for the Leopards. Stewart, Connell, and Rubenskas helped the Leopards outscore the Hawks 7-2 just before the half, as Connell sank a three with five seconds left on the clock to give the hosts a 39-33 advantage before the break.
  • Wentworth started the second half on a commanding 14-2 run that featured three-pointers from Connell and senior Sam Swift (Arlington, Mass.), bringing the Leopards lead to 53-35. After two free throw makes for the Hawks, Connell sank another three to mark a 56-37 score. The two teams swapped scores to work up to a 67-46 score until a Rubenskas three-pointer started a 6-0 run for the Leopards, marking a 73-46 score.
  • After five-straight points for the Hawks, Connell sank a three to mark a 76-51 lead for the Leopards. Following two free throw makes for the Hawks, Rubenskas drained a three to bring the score to 79-53. The two teams swapped baskets until another Rubenskas three brought the score to 85-55, marking the largest lead for the Leopards of the game. The two teams traded baskets to give the game an ending score of 95-65 in favor of the hosts.
  • Stewart led all scorers with 25 points, followed by Rubenskas's 19. Rubenskas tallied a new career-high as 15 of his 19 points came in the second half where he went a perfect 6-6 from the field and 3-3 from beyond the arc.
  • As a team, the Leopards shot 62.5% from the field compared to the Hawks' 42.9%. The Black & Gold also went 47.1% from three-point land.

 

SERIES NOTES:

  • Roger Williams leads the all-time series, 50-21, as the Leopards defeated the Hawks for the first time since 2019 .
