Softball Sweeps Maine-Presque Isle, 4-2 and 14-1

BOSTON, Mass. – Freshman Liz Glavin (Ipswich, Mass.) and sophomore Haylee Bacik (Lowell, Mass.) combined to go 8-for-13 with two doubles, two home runs, and 11 RBI while freshman Sam Burgner (Dalton, Mass.) recorded her second no-hitter of the season in game one as the Wentworth softball team swept Maine-Presque Isle, 4-2 and 14-1.

The Leopards opened the doubleheader by plating a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore Kelly Budzik (Fort Plain, N.Y.) walked and with one out stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. She would come around to score on an RBI single from Glavin. A freshman Sam Curran (Quincy, Mass.) single put runners at first and second and Glavin would eventually score on a wild pitch.

Three Wentworth errors led to a pair of unearned runs for the Owls who tied the game in the top of the third. Sophomore Jasmine Cote (Limestone, Maine) led off with a walk and with two outs stole second. She would move to third when senior Desiree Smith (Thomaston, Maine) reached on an error. Smith stole second and Cote scored on an errant throw, which moved Smith to third. Smith would score on a pickoff attempt that resulted in the third Wentworth miscue of the inning.

Wentworth took a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning as freshman Devinn Doherty (Bridgewater, Mass.) singled and came around to score on a fielding error. The Leopards added an insurance run an inning later when Bacik hit an inside the park home run to left field.

Burgner (5-7) allowed two unearned runs, walked four, and struck out nine in hurling her second no-hitter in a nine-day span. Glavin had two of the Leopards' seven hits.

Maine-Presque Isle sophomore Krista Coffin (Presque Isle, Maine) took the loss to fall to 0-2. She allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits and struck out three.

The Leopards got all the scoring they would need in the first inning, scoring six times as Glavin had an RBI double, Bacik had a two-run double, freshman Adrienne Small (Belfast, Maine) had an RBi single, and Doherty laced a two-run single.

Glavin led off the second inning with her fifth home run of the season to make it a 7-0 game before the Owls countered with a run in the top of the third when Smith doubled home sophomore Jennifer Ouellette (Van Buren, Maine), who was hit by a pitch.

In the home half of the inning the Leopards added seven more runs to their total as Budzik and Glavin each had two-run doubles, Bacik had a two-run single, and senior Randi Swihart (Gardener, Mass.) had a sacrifice fly.

Budzik improved to 3-2 on the season as she allowed one run on three hits and struck out three batters. Glavin was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI, while Bacik was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and four RBI. Swihart finished with a pair of hits and two runs scored.

Freshman Courtney Bishop (Saco, Maine) took the loss for the Owls, allowing 12 runs on nine hits. Smith was 2-for-2 at the plate.

With the two wins Wentworth stands at 8-9 and resumes Commonwealth Coast Conference play on Saturday as the Leopards host Nichols. UMPI falls to 1-14 and is at Daniel Webster tomorrow.
