Softball Drops Pair at Curry

MILTON, Mass. – Rookie pitcher Deanna McMahon (Hanover, Mass.), making her first start of the season, tossed a seven-hit shutout as Curry College took the nightcap of a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) softball doubleheader, 4-0, over visiting Wentworth. The Colonels also won the opener, 7-1, behind sophomore hurler Jennifer Lundstrom (Rehoboth, Mass.).

In Game 1, Curry jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings. Sophomore Chelsey Munsey (Leominster, Mass.) plated a pair in the first frame with a two-run double that scored junior Amanda Felzmann (Bellingham, Mass.) and sophomore Megan Flaherty (Medway, Mass.). The Colonels reached Wentworth's starter, freshman Sam Burgner (Dalton, Mass.), for five more runs in the second, as three Leopards' errors led to three unearned runs.

Wentworth finally dented the scoreboard with a single run in the top of the fourth. Senior Randi Swihart (Gardner, Mass.) singled up the middle with one out, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and eventually came around to score on a RBI base hit by classmate Samantha Altieri (Lakeville, Mass.).

Munsey and freshman Abigail Macomber (Milton, Mass.) had two hits apiece for Curry, and Lundstrom (3-4) threw five strong innings, scattering four hits, and allowing one earned run and two walks while striking out nine. Burgner (5-10) went the distance, surrendering seven hits, four earned runs and two walks, while fanning five.

In Game 2, McMahon and Burgner battled to a scoreless tie through 3 ½ innings. The Colonels finally broke through in the bottom of the fourth, manufacturing three runs via a bases-loaded walk to junior Valarie LaSala (Seaford, N.Y.), a wild pitch and a double steal. Curry also got its fourth run on a successful double steal in the bottom of the sixth.

Among the Leopards' seven hits was a pair by freshman Devinn Doherty (Bridgewater, Mass.). The Colonels got a three-hit performance from junior Mikaela Carney (North Reading, Mass.), to go along with a two-hit effort by Felzmann.

McMahon (2-0) allowed two walks over seven innings while striking out six. Burgner (5-11) again tossed six innings, allowing seven hits, three earned runs and three walks, while fanning three.

With the wins, Curry improved to 16-8 overall and 5-3 in CCC action. Wentworth saw its records fall to 8-15 overall and 1-9 in league play.

The Colonels return to action on Friday, hosting the University of New England in a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader that was re-scheduled from March 31. The Leopards are off until April 10 when they host Wheelock in a non-conference twin bill starting at 3:30 p.m.
