Softball Sweeps Wheelock

Softball Sweeps Wheelock

BOSTON, Mass. – Freshman Liz Glavin (Ipswich, Mass.) set a single-game record by going 5-for-5 – including a program record-tying four doubles – and scored five times to help the Wentworth softball team complete a sweep of Wheelock with a 16-8 win in game two. The Leopards, behind a two-hit shutout from freshman Sam Burgner (Dalton, Mass.), took the first game by a 13-0 tally.

Wentworth got all the runs it needed in the opener in its first at bat, scoring six times by way of four walks, a hit batter, a two-run single from freshman Devinn Doherty (Bridgewater, Mass.), and a Wheelock error. The Leopards added five more runs in the second, thanks in part to a two-run triple from sophomore Haylee Bacik (Lowell, Mass.) as well as RBI from seniors Randi Swihart (Gardner, Mass.) and Samantha Altieri (Lakeville, Mass.).

The Leopards plated single runs in both the third and fourth innings as freshman Sam Curran (Quincy, Mass.) scored on a wild pitch in the third and Glavin delivered an RBI in the fourth.

Curran and Doherty finished with a pair of hits apiece, while Bacik, Doherty, and Altieri drove in two runs each. Burgner picked up her sixth win in the circle, facing just two batters over the minimum over five innings. Wheelock freshman Molly Rose (Weymouth, Mass.) had both of the Wildcats' hits.

Wentworth jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap on a Glavin RBI double, a two-run single from Bacik, and an RBI from freshman Adrienne Small (Belfast, Maine). The Leopards tacked on three more runs in the second as freshman Isabella Grassetti (Monson, Mass.) had an RBI triple and Glavin recorded an RBI double.

The Wildcats got on the board in the top of the third as junior Kim Perault (Medford, Mass.) scored on a wild pitch and freshman Khadijah Myers-Nell (Laurelton, N.Y.) delivered an RBI single. After Wentworth extended its lead to 8-2 in the home half of the inning when Altieri came home on a wild pitch, Wheelock tied the game in the top of the fourth as Rose blasted a grand slam and two runs came in on an error.

Wentworth re-gained the lead in the bottom of the fifth when Glavin delivered and RBI single, which was followed by an RBI double from Curran, who would eventually score on an error. The Leopards closed out the game in the sixth when Glavin hit a ground-rule double to lead off the inning and came home a batter later on an RBI single from Curran.

Glavin drove in three runs in the game, while Curran was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a pair of RBI. Bacik, Swihart, and Small also drove in two runs. Sophomore Kelly Budzin (Fort Plain, N.Y.) allowed three hits and struck out two in two innings of work before Grassetti picked up the win by pitching two innings in relief. Burgner pitched the final two innings, allowing just one hit and striking out five batters.

Rose was 4-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI for Wheelock, giving her a 6-for-6 day.

With the wins the Leopards improve to 10-15 and are at MIT tomorrow. Wheelock falls to 0-11 and is at Becker on Saturday.
