Three Earn CCC Weekly Accolades

BOSTON, Mass. – Three Wentworth Institute of Technology spring student-athletes have earned accolades from the Commonwealth Coast Conference for their play last week. In baseball, junior outfielder/pitcher Alex Wong (Lewiston, Maine) was named, for the second straight week, CCC Player of the Week and sophomore Ben Lewis was tabbed as the league's pitcher of the week. In softball, freshman catcher Liz Glavin (Ipswich, Mass.) was named CCC Rookie of the Week.

Wong continued his hot start by batting .542 (13-for-24) with three doubles, four triples, four stolen bases, eight runs scored, and nine RBI. In seven games he had four multiple-hit games, including going 2-for-4 and driving in the game-winning run in a 6-5, come-from-behind win over Colby-Sawyer. Wong spun a three-hit shutout – striking out two batters – in an 8-0 win over RIT and helped his own cause at the plate by going 2-for-3 with a double, a triple, and two RBI.

On the season Wong has started all 12 of the 7-5 Leopards' games and is batting .525 (21-for-40) with three doubles, five triples, one home run, nine stolen bases, 17 runs scored, and 11 RBI. He has an on-base percentage of .623 and a slugging percentage of .925. In three pitching appearances (two starts) he is 1-0 with a 1.32 earned run average. He has struck out eight batters and walked just three in 13.2 innings of work and is holding batters to a .200 average.

Lewis gets the league's top pitcher award for last week after hurling a complete game in the Leopards' 6-5 win over Colby-Sawyer. In that game he scattered six hits, allowed five runs – all unearned – walked three, and struck out five batters. He set down 10 of the first 11 batters he faced.

In two appearances (both starts), Lewis has a 1-1 record with a 1.93 earned run average. In 14 innings of work he had walked seven and struck out eight, while holding opponents to a .259 batting average.

Glavin began her collegiate career in fine fashion, batting .591 (13-for-22) with four doubles, four home runs, nine runs scored, and 12 RBI for the 2-5 Leopards. In a 10-2 win over Penn State Berks, Glavin, who started all of Wentworth's first seven games (six at catcher, one at third base), went 4-for-4 with a pair of home runs, and five RBI. For the week her on-base percentage was .615 and had an impressive slugging percentage of 1.318.

Both teams open the northern portion of their respective schedules this week. Baseball is at MIT on Wednesday, March 14, while softball hosts Emmanuel in a doubleheader on Saturday, March 17.
