UMass Dartmouth Tops Women's Lacrosse

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Freshman Maddy Allen (Whitman, Mass.) scored six goals and seniors Wildline Thomas (Stamford, Conn.) and Melany Sanchez Alvarez (Stamford, Conn.) each scored five goals as the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth women's lacrosse team defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology, 21-2, in non-conference play Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • UMass Dartmouth scored the game's first seven goals, taking a 7-0 lead after the first quarter. Allen and Sanchez Alvarez each scored three goals in the opening frame.
  • Junior Shayleah Gunning-Lavoie (Laconia, N.H.) put Wentworth on the board with a goal assisted by junior Kaitlyn Kozak (Saddle Brook, N.J.) 42 seconds into the second quarter to trim the lead to 7-1. The Corsairs went on a 7-0 run to end the quarter, upping their lead to 14-1 at the end of the first half.
  • Kozak connected on a free-position shot 4:02 into the third quarter to make it 14-2, however, the hosts kept the Leopards off the board for the remainder of the contest.
  • Junior Hayden Saunders (Old Lyme, Conn.) stopped a career-high 11 saves. Sophomore Maggie McCann (North Grafton, Mass.) won four draw controls, while Gunning-Lavoie and senior Kristina Arabatzis (Saco, Maine) each caused two turnovers.

  • The all-time series is even at 2-all.
