NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Despite a season-high 24 shots, the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's soccer team was unable to locate the back of the Albertus Magnus College net as the Leopards and Falcons concluded their non-conference match in a scoreless double-overtime tie on Wednesday afternoon at Celentano Field.
Wentworth (4-1-1) junior Mary Annon (Concord, N.H.) paced the Black and Gold with a season-best seven shots, while classmate Mary Pastorelli (Whitesboro, N.Y.) and freshman Brooke Paradis (Pelham, N.H.) fired three shots, respectively. Pastorelli registered a pair of shots on goal, and juniors Kristen Carroll (Tewksbury, Mass.) and Amanda Weinberger (Colchester, Conn.) each registered one shot on net. Freshman goalkeeper Micaela Robinson (Goshen, N.Y.) made two saves in 65 minutes of work while classmate Christie Fleming (Braintree, Mass.) played the second half and made a pair of saves.
Albertus Magnus (1-2-2) senior Acacia Nelson (Bridgeport, Conn.), junior Danielle Polvan (East Haven, Conn.) and sophomore Alexa Alves (Naugatuck, Conn.) led the Falcons with a pair of shots and one attempt on net, respectively. Senior goalkeeper Maria Case (West Haven, Conn.) concluded the match with four stops.
Senior Jackie McCullough (Niskayuna, N.Y.) jumpstarted the Wentworth offense with her first of two shots early in the first half before Annon and junior Morgan Miller (Schenectady, N.Y.) each fired an attempt that sailed high and wide of the net. The Leopards offense continued to pester the Falcons backline, tallying five straight attempts, but none of them landed in the net.
Wentworth had a chance to net the first goal of the match late in the first half, but Paradis directed her shot wide of the net, while freshman Danielle McDonnell (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) saw her attempt blocked. The Falcons and Leopards entered the break scoreless, but it was Albertus Magnus that saw an initial second half goal-scoring chance land wide of the net as junior Bridget Judd (Branford, Conn.) headed the ball out of play.
Neither team was able convert on various second half chances, as the match extended to overtime, which saw Wentworth outshoot Albertus Magnus in the extra sessions, three to one. Paradis recorded back-to-back shots at 103:28 and 104:30, respectively, but the first attempt sailed wide, while the second was blocked. Annon recorded a shot at 97:06, but that attempt landed high above the net.
Wentworth concluded the match with seven corners and Albertus Magnus ended with two.
Both teams return to action on Saturday, September 19 as Wentworth travels to Western New England for an 11:00 a.m. kick-off, while Albertus Magnus visits Simmons College at 12:00 p.m.
