Women's Volleyball Falls in TCCC Tri-Match

BOSTON, Mass. – The University of New England women's volleyball team rolled to a pair of The Commonwealth Coast Conference wins – without dropping a set – as the Nor'Easters bested both Gordon and Wentworth in a TCCC tri-match played at Wentworth.

 

The first match of the day featured Gordon against the host Leopards.  The Fighting Scots took a tightly contested first set by a 25-23 margin before winning the second set, 25-12, and closing the match out with a 25-20 third set win.  Junior Claudia Amado (Glastonbury, Conn.) and freshman Lauren Kranyak (Locust Grove, Va.) had 12 and eight kills, respectively, with Amado adding 10 digs and three aces and Kranyak adding five blocks.  Sophomore Alex Nawoichik (South Hamilton, Mass.) had eight blocks, while sophomore Jessica Taber (Detroit, Mich.) had 25 assists and 10 digs in the win.

 

Wentworth received eight kills from senior Sam Vinciguerra (Somersworth, N.H.), seven kills apiece from freshman Michelle Hobbs (Northwood, N.H.) and sophomore Julie Rahilly (Nashua, N.H.), and six kills from junior Julie Bruton (Montgomery, Texas).  Bruton also had 11 digs, while Rahilly added eight digs and three aces.  Sophomore Rebecca Williams (Brockton, Mass.) had 25 assists.

 

UNE took a 25-19 win in the first set over Gordon and never looked back, taking the second set, 25-19, and the third set, 25-18.  Senior Kristen Edwards (Laconia, N.H.) and sophomore Paige Curran (Chelmsford, Mass.) had eight kills apiece, while freshman Kirsta Aidie (Tyngsboro, Mass.) and freshman Nicole Kalinowski (Tuscon, Ariz.) had 20 and 10 digs, respectively.  Freshman Maria Kuehl (Middleton, N.H.) had 22 assists in the Nor'Easters' win.

 

The Fighting Scots were led by Kranyak, who had six kills and seven digs, Nawoichik (four kills, four blocks), Sophomore Keri Hustus' (Eastford, Conn.) 13 digs and 13 assists from Taber.

 

After dropping the first set by a 25-13 score, the Leopards pulled closer in the second set, but would fall, 25-22.  The Nor'Easters would complete their sweep with a 25-16 win in the third set.  Curran (seven kills) paces the UNE offensive attack while Kalinowski had 16 digs, two aces, and two blocks.  Kuehl added 18 more assists to her total for the day.

 

The Leopards had seven kills from Bruton, with Hobbs, Vinciguerra, and Rahilly each adding four kills.  Williams had 17 assists.
