BOSTON, Mass. – Five players scored in double figures to pace the Northeastern University men's basketball team to a 91-62 win over Wentworth Institute of technology in the first-ever meeting between the two neighboring schools.
With the win the Huskies improve to 2-0 while the Leopards fall to 1-2 on the young season.
After the hosts took a 2-0 lead on a pair of free throws from senior Quincy Ford (St. Petersburg, Fla.), sophomore Jason Ganley (Northbridge, Mass.) gave the visitors their only lead of the night when he buried a three pointer.
Northeastern took the lead for good on an 8-0 run which was halted by a senior Ian Therriault (Auburn, Maine) three. However, the Huskies kept the Leopards off the scoreboard for the next five minutes and extended their lead to 17 (23-6).
Ganley would break the scoring drought but the hosts used a 14-0 run to bring the lead to 29 and would build on their lead over the remainder of the half, leading 54-18 at the break. Northeastern shot 66.7 percent from the floor in the opening half while holding the Leopards to 20 percent.
Wentworth scored the first eight points of the second half, cutting the lead to 28 on a pair of Ganley free throws. The Huskies countered with a 9-2 run and would maintain a lead of around 30 until the Leopards kept the hosts off the board for a span of 5:13 and pulled within 21. That would be as close as the Leopards would get as Northeastern took the 91-62 win.
Sophomore Devon Begley (Pearland, Texas) and junior Jimmy Marshall (Richmond, Va.) each had 14 points for the victors who also received 12 points from freshman Brandon Kamga (Reston, Va.), 11 from freshman Anthony Green (Quincy, Mass.), and 10 from Ford. Green tied for the team lead with seven rebounds and Begley had six assists.
Ganley recorded a career high of 23 points to go along with six rebounds. Freshman Dylan Reno (Franklin, Mass.) had eight points, three assists, and four steals, freshman Jack Buckley (Hanover, Mass.) added seven points, and sophomore Sam Knollmeyer (Hampton, N.H.) had six rebounds and five assists.
Northeastern edged Wentworth in rebounding, 45-44, and would turn 24 Leopard turnovers into 34 points.
Wentworth is at Tufts on Saturday.
