DAVENPORT, Fla. – Sophomore Kyle Doner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) scored six goals and assisted on three others and junior Jacob Eldred (Goffstown, N.H.) added five goals and three assists to help the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team pick up a 19-13 victory over Saint Joseph's (Maine) in a non-conference contest played at Northeast Regional Park.
With the win the Leopards improve to 2-0 on the season while the Monks fall to 1-3.
Doner and St. Joseph's junior Michael Finn (Quincy, Mass.) traded goals 31 seconds apart before goals from freshman Ben Coakley (Flemington, N.J.) and Eldred gave the Leopards a 3-1 lead. The Monks made it 3-2 on a goal from junior Tyler Retalic (Framingham, Mass.) with 4:19 left, however, Doner and Coakley put Wentworth ahead, 5-2 with 3:25 remaining in the opening frame. Saint Joseph's scored the final two goals of the quarter to come within a goal (5-4) on goals 33 seconds apart from senior Brendan Barrett (East Sandwich, Mass.) and classmate Matt Donnell (Watertown, Mass.).
After Finn tied the game with a goal 1:20 into the second period, Wentworth scored the next five times – including three on man-up situations – to take a 10-5 lead at the half. Doner had three of the five goals while Coakley and Eldred each had a goal and two assists during the run. The Leopards extended their lead to 14-6 after three quarters as Eldred factored in three of the four goals (two goals, one assist) and junior Jason Buck (Manlius, N.Y.) had a goal and an assist.
Wentworth upped its lead to as many as nine on two occasions in the fourth quarter. Sophomore Dolan McCarthy (Hyde Park, Mass.) scored with 8:03 remaining to make it 16-7 and a man-down goal from Doner with 4:56 remaining made it 17-8. The Monks scored the next five goals – including four on a man advantage – to pull within four at 17-13 with 1:39 remaining. Finn and freshman Cody Sevigny (Biddeford, Maine) each scored twice during the run, however, goals from Eldred and McCarthy helped to seal the win.
Coakley finished with three goals and three assists while McCarthy added two goals and three assists. Junior Sean Brennan (Stony Point, N.Y.) collected seven ground balls while senior Brad Krueger (Chelmsford, Mass.) had six ground balls and caused three turnovers. Finn led St. Joseph's with six goals and an assist while senior Liam Skinner (Irving, Texas) had five ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Senior Scott Boucher (Salisbury, N.H.) made three saves in the first half while classmate Adam Dufault (Lexington, Mass.) had five saves in the second half. Senior Connor Trainor (Franklin, Mass.) made six saves in three quarters for the Monks before senior Wyatt Porter (Pittsfield, Mass.) turned aside four saves in the final quarter. Wentworth had a 49-32 shot advantage and a 47-25 edge in ground balls.
Wentworth completes its spring break trip against Moravian on Saturday at Noon.
