BOSTON, Mass. – Paced by a 6-0 run over a span of 15:19, the University of New England men's lacrosse team erased a 4-1 deficit and took a 7-4 led, en route to an 11-6 over Wentworth Institute of Technology in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Tuesday night.
With the win the Nor'Easters improve to 9-8 overall and conclude CCC play with a 4-4 mark. UNE will play in the CCC Tournament's first round on Saturday. The Leopards see their season end with a 6-8 record (1-7).
Sophomore Dolan McCarthy (Hyde Park, Mass.) put the Leopards on the board with 10:54 left in the opening frame before sophomore Garrett Bozek (Nashua, N.H.) evened the score 1:38 later. Goals from sophomore Kyle Doner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.), junior Peter Andersson (Madison, N.J.), and sophomore Riley Smith (Plaistow, N.H.) put Wentworth ahead, 4-1, with 2:19 remaining in the half.
Junior Alex Zadworny (Florence, Mass.) started the UNE run with a goal with 51 ticks left in the first half to make it 4-2. Zadworny tied the game at 4-4 with a goal with 9:06 remaining, which came 4:52 after a man-up goal from sophomore Zach Bossi (Amherst, N.H.). Goals from sophomore Adam Race (Erieville, N.Y.), junior Mitch Mullin (Cumberland, Maine), and senior Sean Larner (Concord, N.H.) gave the Nor'Easters a 7-4 lead with 1:28 remaining. Freshman Ben Coakley (Flemington, N.J.) ended the run with a goal with 32 seconds left in the quarter, pulling Wentworth to within a pair at 7-5.
UNE used a 4-0 spurt – with two goals apiece from Bozek and Mullin – in a span of 2:08 to extend its lead to 11-5 before McCarthy completed the scoring two and a half minutes later.
Bozek finished with three goals and two assists while Mullin had three tallies, and Zadworny had two goals and two assists. Senior Matt Layton (Medford, N.Y.) was 15-of-20 at the X and scooped up eight ground balls while Larner had a pair of caused turnovers.
McCarthy had two goals for Wentworth and Coakley had a goal and an assist. Senior Brad Krueger (Chelmsford, Mass.) and junior Jacob Eldred (Goffstown, N.H.) collected four ground balls apiece while sophomore Kilian Ryan (Saranac Lake, N.Y.) had two caused turnovers.
Senior Tyler Nevers (Southbury, Conn.) made 10 saves to pick up the win. Senior Scott Boucher (Salisbury, N.H.) made 15 of his 17 saves in the first half, while classmate Adam Dufault (Lexington, Mass.) made five stops over the final 7:24 of the contest. UNE had advantages in shots (49-27) and ground balls (43-27).
