BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore Dolan McCarthy (Hyde Park, Mass.) scored four of his game-high five goals in the first half as the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team jumped out to a 9-2 lead after the first 30 minutes of action and never looked back, en route to a 12-3 win over Emerson in non-conference action Saturday afternoon.
McCarthy opened the game with a goal 47 seconds into the contest before the Lions evened the game on a junior Cameron Radenberg (Los Angeles, Calif.) goal with 11:52 left. Freshman Ben Coakley (Flemington, N.J.) had a goal and two assists as the Leopards closed out the quarter on a 4-0 run with McCarthy, sophomore Kyle Doner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.), and senior Kevin Butler (Jefferson, Mass.) also scoring goals.
Radenberg brought Emerson to within 5-2 on a goal 4:16 into the second quarter, however, Wentworth held Emerson scoreless over the next 27:10 and increased its lead to 11-2. McCarthy had three goals during that stretch while junior Jacob Eldred (Goffstown, N.H.), Doner, and Coakley each found the back of the net once.
Emerson ended the drought on a junior Marshall Tate (Taunton, Mass.) goal with 13:34 remaining before Doner set up junior Jason Buck (Manlius, N.Y.) 3:06 later to complete the scoring.
In addition to McCarthy's five goals, Coakley finished with two goals and two assists and Doner added a pair of goals and a helper. Senior Brad Krueger (Chelmsford, Mass.) had four ground balls while senior Jake Ollila (Goffstown, N.H.) and junior Killian Ryan (Saranac Lake, N.Y.) caused two turnovers apiece.
Radenberg had two goals and an assist for the Lions while sophomore Austin DiPietro collected 10 ground balls. DiPietro was 10-for-13 at the X.
Senior Adam Dufault (Lexington, Mass.) made a pair of saves in the first 30 minutes of action while classmate Scott Boucher (Salisbury, N.H.) turned aside five shots in the second half. Junior Bailey Kennedy (Swampscott, Mass.) had 14 saves for Emerson.
Wentworth (4-1) hosts Anna Maria on Monday.
