NEW LONDON, NH. – The Wentworth men's soccer team earned a 3-0 victory at Colby-Sawyer, in The Commonwealth Coast Conference action on Tuesday afternoon. The Leopards improve their playoff position and their TCCC record to 7-4 with the victory. The Chargers fall to 1-10 in conference play. Each team has two conference games remaining.
The Leopards struck first in the 10th minute when sophomore Dan Santacroce (Northford, Conn.) sent a ball into the box to a crowd of players. Junior Ben Nasman (Lenox, Mass.) came away with the ball and fired it into the bottom right corner of the net.
Ten minutes later, Wentworth increased its lead to two goals. Sophomore Josh Deschene (Webster, Mass.) sprinted down the midfield with control of the ball and split a couple of defenders. He found junior teammate John Golden (Whitman, Mass.) with a great through ball. Golden did the rest as he separated from the defense for the break away goal.
The Leopards held steady with the lead in the second half, giving up only a couple of chances to the Chargers' strikers. Colby-Sawyer held a 10-7 advantage on shots, but could only get three on net. Junior goalie Brian Pearsall (Sanford, Maine) made all three saves and earned his second shutout of the season for the Leopards.
Colby-Sawyer senior keeper Chris Feltes (Manchester, N.H.) left the game with two saves and 15 minutes remaining, junior Max Williams (Ipswich, Mass.) played the remainder of the game making his sixth appearance.
Wentworth added a third goal with three minutes to play when goalie Williams could not control a ball sent in from midfield. Freshman Jake Buzzell (Merrimac, Mass.) gathered the ball and shot it into the net over the keeper for his first collegiate goal.
Colby-Sawyer will play at Endicott on Saturday, while the Leopards take a break from conference play with a match at Mass. Maritime on Thursday.
