BOSTON, Mass. – Two goals 29 seconds apart gave the Worcester Polytechnic Institute men's soccer team (3-3-3) the insurance on a frigid Sweeney field Tuesday evening as the Leopards of Wentworth Institute of Technology (2-7) dropped a 3-0 decision in non-conference action.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Wentworth managed the first shot on goal of the night just over four minutes in on a far shot by sophomore Sam Wong (Quincy, Mass.) that was saved. WPI answered with a handful of shots of their own within the next 15 minutes, with the final of the spurt being on goal and saved by senior Noah Lawless (Whitefish Bay, Wis.).
  • After the two teams traded shots later in the half, the Engineers managed to beat Lawless as a pass across the box by graduate student Billy Chissoe (Gig Harbor, Wash.) found the foot of junior Alejandro Clermont-Delgado (San Francisco, Calif.), who found the back of the net to put the visitors ahead by one at the 33:11 mark.
  • A corner kick try in the 41st minute by freshman Alex Burnham (Gilmanton IW, N.H.) was shortly followed by two shots, one apiece by senior Jacob Dukeshire (Nashua, N.H.) and junior Christopher Jimenez (Doral, Fla.), whose shot was from point blank range. Both were saved by graduate student Julian Quaresima (East Meadow, N.Y.).
  • WPI doubled their lead at the 66:18 mark on a slick tic-tac-toe play that resulted in a tap-in goal for sophomore Tora Ito (Hopkinton, Mass.).
  • Just 29 seconds later, the Engineers added to their lead as graduate student Francesco Valagussa (Arlington, Mass.) capitalized on a turnover out front.
  • WPI held onto their three-goal lead for the remainder of the contest, with Quaresima leading with five saves in between the pipes. Lawless made seven saves for the Leopards in the setback.
