BIDDEFORD, Maine – Freshman Dylan Michaud (Hopkinton, Mass.) scored a pair of goals to lead the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's soccer team to a 2-1 win over the University of New England in Commonwealth Coast Conference play Tuesday night.

With the win the Leopards improve to 3-9-1 overall and 1-4-0 in league play while the Nor'Easters fall to 1-8-5 (0-2-2).

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Wentworth wasted little time getting on the board, scoring on its first shot of the game. Sophomore Sam Biafore (Wakefield, R.I.) set up Michaud who put home a shot to the lower left corner at 2:56 of the contest
  • At the 20:16 mark, UNE tied the contest with senior Chris Caiazzo (Greenville, Maine) tallying off a feed from classmate Gavin Mason (North Berwick, Maine).
  • Play continued back and forth before Michaud notched his third of the season, set up by seniors Jacob Dukeshire (Nashua, N.H.) and Nile Keiller (Bowie, Md.) with 15:25 left in the opening stanza. The Nor'Easters best chance to tie the game came with 1:03 left, however, sophomore Giovanni Ruggieri (Canton, Mass.) came up with the save.
  • The Black & Gold applied early pressure in the second half, however none of their three shots found the net in the first 15:00. UNE had a shot attempt go wide in the 68th minute and another in the 72nd minute that went wide of the mark.
  • Michaud nearly had a hat trick, putting a shot on net in the 83rd minute, however, Nor'Easter junior Sean McCarthy (Salem, N.H.) made a save. On the ensuing rebound, sophomore Kyle Hallahan (Westwood, Mass.) had his shot get blocked, which resulted in a Wentworth corner kick.
  • The Leopards continued to control play, not allowing the hosts an attempt to tie the game in the closing minutes.
  • Ruggieri needed to make just one save to notch his first win of the season. McCarthy made two saves for UNE. Wentworth had advantages in shots (14-6) and corner kicks (3-1).

ALL-TIME SERIES:

  • Wentworth won its fourth straight and seventh in the last eight meetings. The Leopards hold an 18-3-4 all-time record against the Nor'Easters.
