Men's Tennis Snaps Losing Streak

NEWPORT, R.I. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology men's tennis team snapped a five-match losing streak and won for the first time in three weeks as the Leopards bested Salve Regina, 7-2, in Commonwealth Coast Conference action.

With the win the Leopards improve to 3-5 overall and 2-3 in CCC play while the Seahawks dropped fall to 0-9 (0-6).

In doubles play, the Black & Gold took a 3-0 lead as sophomore James Drum (Madison, Conn.) teamed with freshman Matthew Smith (Pelham, N.H.) to take an 8-3 win over Colin Gunning and Khoa Nguyen at number one. Number two saw sophomore Josh Dowd (Bristol, Conn.) team with freshman Nate Schwartz (Chester Springs, Md.) to earn an 8-6 win over Monaf Awwa and Matthew Carrol. Junior Sean Nolan (Newport, R.I.) and freshman Zach Peter (Preston, Conn.) completed the doubles sweep with an 8-6 win at number three over Matt Gingras and Ned Richard.

The top four singles flights went to Wentworth as Drum defeated Gunning at number one, 7-6 (7-3), 6-1, Smith defeated Nguyen at number two, 6-0, 6-2, Schwartz defeated Awwa at number three, 6-0, 6-1, and freshman Seng Ly (Lynn, Mass.) defeated Matthew Carroll, 6-0, 6-3, at number four.

Salve Regina claimed points at number five when Gingras defeated Dowd 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 and C.J. Maksut defeated Peter, 6-1, 6-1, at number six.

Wentworth hosts Nichols on Tuesday.
