Softball Finishes Spring Trip With Loss to St. Joseph

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology softball team closed out its annual spring trip with an 8-2 loss to St. Joseph (Conn.) at the FastPitch Dreams Classic.

St. Joseph scored a single run in the top of the first inning and two runs in the third before plating three runs in the top of the fourth inning to make it a 6-0 game.

Wentworth got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning when freshman Karsyn Sawyer (Chatham, N.Y.) singled in sophomore Sam Curran (Quincy, Mass.), who had led off with a single, stole second, and went to third on a passed ball. The Leopards would make it a 6-2 game in the bottom of the fifth when Curran doubled in classmate Devinn Doherty (Bridgewater, Mass.). Doherty had delivered a two-out single and stole second.

The Blue Jays rounded out the scoring with two runs in the top of the sixth, scoring on an RBI single and an error. The Leopards would have runners at second and third with two outs in the seventh, but would come no closer.

Curran finished with three hits for the Black & Gold, with Sawyer, freshman Erin McKinnon (Berlin, Conn.), and Doherty recording a hit apiece. Freshman Kate Lee (Spruce Head, Maine) took the loss in the circle.

Wentworth (2-7) opens the northern portion of its schedule on Tuesday at Mass. Maritime.
