Softball Splits Pair of Walk-Offs on Day Two of Florida Slate

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology softball team (3-1) found themselves on both sides in a pair of walk-off games that required extras Monday, first with the Leopards prevailing by a 6-5 score over Elizabethtown (1-1) before falling to Husson (4-2) by a 3-2 score later on.

GAME ONE: WENTWORTH 6, ELIZABETHTOWN 5 (FINAL – 9 INNINGS)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Leopards cut the deficit to one at 2-1 in the back half of the inning as a double by freshman Kelsey Medalia (Tacoma, Wash.) drove home a run.
  • Wentworth tied the score and later took the lead in the second inning as a single by junior Katelin Howe (Bow, N.H.) brought home a score by junior Jess Rowe (Yardley, Pa.). Later, an error led to a run scored by Howe, giving the Leopards a 3-2 lead.
  • Later in the second, a single by Medalia brought home both runners on base to extend Wentworth's lead to 5-2. However, in the sixth inning, the Blue Jays knotted the score at five-all as a single by sophomore Brooke Huczko (Macugnie, Pa.) combined with errors brought home three base runners.
  • The two teams stayed pat until the ninth inning when sophomore Kyla Igawa (Long Beach, Calif.) sent a sac fly to the outfield, bringing home a game-winning run by graduate student Kaitlin Pettenger (Budd Lake, N.J.) to mark a 6-5 score.
  • Medalia (2-4, 3 RBI) and Rowe (3-3) paced the Leopards' bats while Rowe struck out two across six innings of action in the circle before sophomore Julie Schriver (Moscow, Pa.) picked up the save and the win in relief.

SERIES NOTES:
