Softball Sinks Emmanuel Ahead of CCC Opener

BOSTON, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology softball team (10-10) totaled 24 hits across two wins versus crosstown rival Emmanuel Saints (5-9) as the Leopards marched to respective 7-0 and 12-8 victories in non-conference play Tuesday evening.

 
GAME ONE: WENTWORTH 7, EMMANUEL 0

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Black & Gold got on the board early in the opening frame after as graduate student Kaitlin Pettenger (Budd Lake, N.J.) reached third on two wild pitches, junior Jess Rowe (Yardley, Pa.) launched a single to bring home Pettenger and raise the score to 1-0.
  • Wentworth added to their lead in the fourth as a groundout with Pettenger and freshman Brianna Miller (West Haven, Conn.) both in scoring position brought the former to third and the latter home, marking a 2-0 advantage.
  • In the fifth inning, in the midst of a steal attempt, Wentworth pushed their lead to three as a failed steal attempt led to a score from third by junior Katie Kranz (Bedford, Mass.).
  • The Leopards doubled their lead in the sixth, starting with a double from Pettenger that ran home Miller, marking a 4-0 lead. Later, a single by freshman Kelsey Medalia (Tacoma, Wash.) ran home Pettenger to push the advantage to 5-0 before a single by senior Annabelle Hebard (North Attleboro, Mass.) later brought home Medalia, marking a 6-0 score.
  • Miller blasted a one-run home run in the seventh inning, extending the Leopards' lead to 7-0. Pettenger, Miller, Kranz, and Hebard all led the offense with multiple hits. Sophomore Julie Schriver (Moscow, Pa.) was nearly flawless in the circle, striking out four and only surrendering one hit.

GAME TWO: WENTWORTH 12, EMMANUEL 8

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Wentworth continued their scoring into the first inning of game two as, with Pettenger in scoring position, a single by Medalia drove her home to mark a 1-0 score. Later in the inning, a double by Hebard brought home Medalia, raising the score to 2-0.
  • The Saints knotted the score at two-all in the back half of the inning as, with the bases loaded, a double by junior Abigail Farr (Windsor Locks, Conn.) drove home two of the base runners to tie the score.
  • The Leopards regained their two-point lead in the third inning as a double by Rowe with Pettenger in scoring position drove her home. Later, an error led to Hebard reaching base, with Rowe scoring on the same sequence, marking a 4-2 score.
  • In the fourth, an error brought Pettenger to second while bringing home junior Katelin Howe (Bow, N.H.), raising the score to 5-2. Shortly thereafter, Pettenger stole third and capitalized on an error at home, scoring to bring the score to 6-2. Later in the inning, with two runners on, a single by Kranz drove home Medalia, pushing the mark to 7-2.
  • A groundout by Howe in the fifth inning with two runners on drove home another score, extending the lead to 8-2. Later, a single by Pettenger drove home Miller from third, pushing the score to 9-2 before a walk with the bases loaded marked a 10-2 score.
  • Emmanuel cut the lead to 10-6 in the back half of the inning, picking up three runs on a home run by senior Olivia Conti (Cranston, R.I.).However, the Leopards responded in the sixth, capitalizting on an error to mark a 11-6 score before another groundout brought home Howe, pushing the score to 12-6.
  • Conti sailed her second home run of the game in the sixth frame with a runner on, cutting the hosts' deficit to 12-8. However, the Leopards fended off any last attempt by the Saints.
  • Rowe led the charge in the circle, striking out four batters across six innings. Medalia led the offense with four hits while Pettenger notched four runs and three stolen bases to her record-breaking mark.

SERIES NOTES:

  • The Black & Gold have won five straight matchups versus the Saints.
