WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Sophomore Gia Miccio (Bellmore, N.Y.) registered four hits and added three RBI across two contests as the Hartford Hawks softball team (9-5-1) topped the Wentworth Institute of Technology (8-10) by 7-1 and 5-3 scores Saturday afternoon.
GAME ONE: HARTFORD 7, WENTWORTH 1
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Wentworth tallied the opening run in the first inning as a single by junior Katie Kranz (Bedford, Mass.) combined with an error brought her to third and the runner on base home, marking a 1-0 score early on.
- The Hawks took a 2-1 edge in the back half of the frame as a single by graduate student Mara Sczecienski (Mason, Mich.) with two runners on brought home both. The hosts extended their lead in the third as a single by Miccio with two runners on base brought home one, marking a 3-1 game.
- The hosts pushed their lead to 7-1 across the fifth and sixth innings with the help of doubles by freshman Alexis Sealey (Pleasant Hill, Calif.) and freshman Sydney Matz (Ellington, Conn.).
- Sophomore Julie Schriver (Moscow, Pa.) led the efforts in the circle, striking out two batters across five innings. Kranz and junior Jess Rowe (Yardley, Pa.) tallied a hit apiece for the Leopards.
GAME TWO: HARTFORD 5, WENTWORTH 3
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Miccio gave the Hawks a 1-0 lead in the third inning with a single with a runner on base. Later in the inning, a double by junior Olivia Wolk (Sugarloaf, Pa.) ran home Miccio, marking a 2-0 advantage.
- Wentworth knotted the score at two aside in the fourth inning as a single by junior Katelin Howe (Bow, N.H.) with the bases loaded ran home two scorers and brought the last to third.
- The Leopards took a 3-2 edge in the fifth frame as sophomore Sydney Miccile (Holliston, Mass.) got on base by a fielder's choice, combined with an error, bringing home a score by Rowe.
- Hartford rallied in the sixth inning as an error drove home two scores, marking a 4-3 score. A double later in the frame pushed Hartford's lead to 5-3. The Leopards managed to get one runner on base in the seventh but couldn't bring her home, marking a 5-3 final score.
- Offensively, senior Annabelle Hebard (North Attleboro, Mass.) and freshman Abigail Delia (Litchfield, N.H.) both tallied two hits. In the circle, Rowe struck out two batters across a complete game.
NEXT UP:
- The Black & Gold travel to Emmanuel on Tuesday for a previously postponed doubleheader that was scheduled for March 24.
