Nichols Pulls Away from Women's Lacrosse

BOSTON, Mass. – Eight student-athletes recorded two or more points as the Nichols College women's lacrosse team defeated Wentworth Institute of technology, 19-6, in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Nichols jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first 4:54 of the contest before junior Shayleah Gunning-Lavoie (Laconia, N.H.) got Wentworth on the board. The Bison tallied the next three to take a 7-1 lead before sophomore Maggie McCann (North Grafton, Mass.) scored a pair of goals in a span of 21 seconds to make it 7-3 after the first quarter.
  • The Bison scored both goals in the second quarter to make it 9-3 before McCann opened the third quarter with a goal bringing the Black & Gold to within 9-4, 11 seconds into the third quarter.
  • Nichols scored seven of the next eight goals in the quarter with freshman Kiki Dempsey (Stonington, Conn.) scoring for Wentworth and led, 16-5, after three quarters. The Bison scored the first three goals of the fourth quarter with Gunning-Lavoie closing out the scoring with her second of the game with 2:31 left.
  • McCann scored three times for Wentworth with Gunning-Lavoie adding two goals and an assist. McCann also won six draw controls. Freshman Bella Gillis (Danvers, Mass.) scooped up four ground balls.

SERIES HISTORY

  • Today was the 11th all-time meeting between the two teams.
