Women's Tennis Picks up First Win

BOSTON, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology women's tennis team swept doubles play and won the first three completed singles matches, en route to a 7-2 win over Worcester State in non-conference action at Harvard University. With the win, first-year head coach Erin Phillips earned her first collegiate coaching victory.

Graduate student Jillian Flynn (Billerica, Mass.) teamed with freshman Jessica Simms (Deep River, Conn.) to give the hosts a 1-0 lead with an 8-3 win over junior Miranda Baron (Webster, Mass.) and sophomore Paige Moriarty (Feeding Hills, Mass.) at number three doubles. Sophomore Caitlin Corcoran (Brockton, Mass.) teamed with junior Virginia Ofer (Cooperstown, N.Y.) at number one to put the Leopards ahead, 2-0 with an 8-3 win over freshman Shelby Jankins (West Brookfield, Mass.) and sophomore Megan Shepard (Middletown, Conn.), before senior Deborah Massaro (Stony Point, N.Y.) teamed with sophomore Nicole McColgan (Tewksbury, Mass.) to complete the sweep with an 8-6 win over senior Brooke Michanczyk (Middletown, Conn.) and senior Laura Sarkis (West Springfield, Mass.).

McColgan put Wentworth ajead by a 4-0 score with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Michanczyk at number four singles and Corcoran's 6-1, 6-3 win over junior Danielle Candelieri (Chelmsford, Mass.) at number one clinched the win for the Leopards.

Ofer defeated Sarkis, 6-3, 6-4, at number five to give the Black & Gold a 6-0 lead before the Lancers got on the board when Shepard defeated senior Olivia Hegner (Medford, Mass.), 6-1, 6-4, at number three. Massaro defeated Jankins, 7-5, 6-4, at number two and Worcester State sophomore Cassandra Goncalves (Ludlow, Mass.) used a three-set (7-6, 2-6, 1-0 (11-9)) win at number six to complete the match.

With the win Wentworth improves to 1-1 and is at Lesley on Thursday night. Worcester State stands at 0-1 and is at home against Newbury, also on Thursday.
