Women's Volleyball Splits at Lasell

NEWTON, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology women's volleyball team split a pair of matches in a tri-match hosted by Lasell College. The Leopards were defeated by the host Lasers, 3-2, before defeating Maine Maritime, 3-0.

Against Lasell, the Leopards took a 25-21 decision in the opening set, thanks to five kills from freshman Sydney Meyers (Arnold, Md.) and three from junior Hannah Bailey (Plymouth, Mass.), with neither committing an attack error in the frame, helping the Black & Gold to hit .321. The Lasers evened the match at a set apiece as they rallied for a 25-23 win in the second set.

Wentworth took a 2-1 lead after a 25-22 win in the third set with Bailey's four kills and Meyers' three aces leading the charge. However, Lasell forced a fifth set after forcing the Leopards to hit -.176 in the fourth set, en route to a 25-18 win.

The deciding set would see five ties and a pair of lead changes before the Lasers pulled away for a 15-11 win to take the match.

Bailey had 12 kills and 12 digs while Meyers had 10 kills, four aces, and nine digs. Freshman Katelyn Carlson (Stratford, Conn.) recorded eight kills, 17 digs, and a pair of blocks, sophomore Jordan Young (Derry, N.H.) had seven kills, senior Shannon Ponce (San Jose, Calif.) had 33 assists, and senior Sam Curran (Quincy, Mass.) had 16 digs.

In the first-ever meeting between the two programs, Wentworth set the tone early, defeating the Mariners by a 25-8 score in the opening set. The Leopards hit .348 while Maine Maritime hit -.231. Bailey (four kills) and Carlson (three kills, three aces) paced the offense in the opening frame.

Bailey would record four kills and Meyers would serve two aces in the second set, which was won by the Leopards 25-19, before Bailey and freshman Kayla Gendreau (Hudson, N.H.) had four and three kills, respectively, in the final set which was won by Wentworth, 25-17/

Bailey had 12 kills while Carlson added six. Carlson, Meyers, Curran, and sophomore Griffin Sacco (New Fairfield, Conn.) each served three aces, Curran had 10 digs, and sophomore Amanda Hunton (Monroe, N.Y.) had 10 assists and nine digs.

The Leopards (5-4) are at Suffolk on Tuesday night.
