Women's Volleyball Drops Conference Finale

WENHAM, Mass. – Senior Faith Gerdes (Wall Lake, Iowa) recorded 11 kills, hit .458, and had four blocks to help pace the Gordon College women's volleyball team to a 3-0 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology in the Commonwealth Coast Conference finale for both squads.

With the win the Fighting Scots improve to 12-13 overall and 2-6 in CCC play while the Leopards fall to 13-13 (2-6). By virtue of Gordon winning, the two teams finished tied for sixth however the Fighting Scots earn the number six seed in the CCC Tournament based on the head-to-head result.

The Fighting Scots took a 1-0 lead after a 25-15 win in the opening set. Gerdes had four kills on 10 swings and senior Laura Schmidt (Stuart, Fla.) added three of her own. Sophomore Maggie Risma (Hudson, Ohio) served four aces and had eight digs. For Wentworth, junior Hannah Bailey (Plymouth, Mass.) had three kills and freshman Sydney Meyers (Arnold, Md.) had two while senior Sam Curran (Quincy, Mass.) had five digs.

Gordon took a 25-13 win in the second set with Gerdes recording five kills on 10 swings – to go along with two blocks – and Risma notching 10 digs. Bailey had a pair of digs for the Black & Gold. The Fighting Scots closed out the match with a 25-13 win in the third set as sophomore Jenna Labbadia (Berlin, Conn.) had four kills on five swings to go along with a block.

Gerdes did not make an error in her 24 swings while Labbadia had seven kills and Schmidt added six. Risma had four of Gordon's seven aces to along with 23 digs. Senior Joy Kimmel (Madison, Conn.) had 30 assists in the win.

Bailey had six kills for the Leopards while Meyers added three. Curran and sophomore Amanda Hunton (Monroe, N.Y.) had 18 and 10 digs, respectively, and senior Shannon Ponce (San Jose, Calif.) had 14 assists and an ace.

Wentworth closes out the 2014 campaign on Saturday in a tri-match at Regis with Newbury.
