BOSTON, Mass. – In conjunction with difficult decisions made by both the Commonwealth Coast Conference Board of Directors and the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Presidents Council, Wentworth Institute of Technology will be suspending all athletically related activities in all sports(traditional and non-traditional seasons) for the remainder of the spring 2020 season. These decisions have followed other Division III playing conferences who have also followed guidance from the NCAA's Board of Governors in recent days.
Wentworth's teams presently on spring break will be allowed to complete competition in conjunction with these trips before having their seasons ended upon returning to campus.
COMMONWEALTH COAST CONFERENCE STATEMENT (Link)
With the health and safety of our student-athletes in mind, as well as the welfare of our campus communities as a whole, the Commonwealth Coast Conference Board of Directors, has come to the difficult decision to cancel all athletic competition. Institutions with teams that have returned from spring break trips will cancel athletic competition immediately. Institutions with teams currently on spring break trips will cancel athletic competitions upon the completion of those respective trips.
The decision comes following the NCAA Board of Governors' decision to cancel the remaining winter and spring NCAA Championships and encouraging conferences and institutions to make decisions and take action in the best interest of their student-athletes and communities.
Additionally, the NCAA Board of Governors directs Divisions I, II and III to enact modifications, changes, or waivers to legislation and rules where appropriate to provide necessary relief due to regulations and policies impacted by COVID-19.
GREAT NORTHEAST ATHLETIC CONFERENCE STATEMENT (Link)
Following the NCAA announcement on Thursday afternoon to cancel all remaining winter and spring championships, and recognizing the spread and ongoing threat of COVID-19, the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Presidents' Council voted unanimously to make the difficult decision to call off all spring competition, practices, and championships for the remainder of the 2019-20 academic year.
As all parties continue to monitor the hourly developments and spread of the 2019 novel Coronavirus, many GNAC member institutions have already shifted to temporary or semester-long online learning structures prior to Friday's announcement.
While league administrators and presidents have worked diligently over the last week as the crisis has rapidly developed across the globe, the discontinuation of our spring sports is necessary in order to best prioritize and protect the health and safety of our student-athletes and surrounding communities.
The NCAA is also encouraging schools and conferences to make decisions and take action in the best interest of their students and campuses.
