Baseball's Postseason Run Comes to a Close

BRISTOL, R.I. – The third seeded Suffolk University baseball team (26-16) scored a pair of runs in the second inning and held on to defeat sixth-seeded Wentworth Institute of Technology (21-19), 3-1, in an elimination round game played at Roger Williams University.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After both teams went quietly in the first inning and Wentworth was set down in order to start the second, Suffolk plyed two runs in the home half of the inning. Back-to-back singles to open the frame, followed by a sacrifice bunt to move the runners over set up a two-run single. The Rams had the bases loaded with one out but freshman Nigel Cross (Worcester, Mass.) got a strikeout and a flyout to end the inning.
  • In the fourth inning, senior A.T. DiPina (Pawtucket, R.I.) led off with a single and, with one out, went to second on a wild pitch. Senior Michael Petit (Sandwich, Mass.) reached on an error and both runners moved up when freshman Christian Roncal (Glendale, Ariz.) grounded out. However, a sharp line out ended the threat.
  • The Rams nearly added onto their lead in the fifth, as, with two outs and a runner on second, the runner tried to score on a single. Sophomore Mike Sibert (Billerica, Mass.) fired to Cross who fired to DiPina to get the inning-ending out.
  • A leadoff single from senior Christian Peruzzi (Plymouth, Mass.) started the sixth inning for the Black & Gold. Peruzzi went to second ona DiPina single and both runners moved over on a sacrifice from sophomore Matthew Favazzo (Lexington, Mass.). Petit grounded out to score Peruzzi.
  • Wentworth left a runner on in the seventh after a sophomore Matt Robinson (Mystic, Conn.) single and, in the eighth, DiPina walked and Petit had a two-out single, which moved DiPina to second. However, a strikeout ended the inning.
  • Suffolk added an insurance run in the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly, making it 3-1. In the top of the ninth, sophomore Nick Cullinan (Sandy Hook, Conn.) drew a leadoff walk and went to second on a junior Jake Prisco (Bridgewater, Mass.) walk. Both runners moved over on a sacrifice by Robinson however, were both stranded there after a strikeout and a line out to end the game.
  • Cross took the loss (4-3), allowing two runs on six hits and striking out three in six innings of work. Freshman Brandon Farinas (Lewiston, Maine) pitched an inning, allowing one run on one hit and striking out a pair. Sophomore Alec Peruzzi (Plymouth, Mass.) pitched one inning, yielding one walk.
